An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join an established Specialist Palliative Care service in Wales for an initial 3-month contract.
The successful candidate will work alongside an experienced team of consultants and resident medical staff, providing consultant-led specialist palliative care across hospital services while collaborating closely with community teams, specialist nurses and allied healthcare professionals. The post offers opportunities to support symptom management, end-of-life care, rehabilitation, education, research and service development within a highly supportive multidisciplinary environment.


Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deliver consultant-led specialist palliative medicine services across hospital-based settings.
  • Provide expert assessment and management of patients with complex palliative care needs.
  • Lead symptom control, rehabilitation and end-of-life care planning.
  • Participate in the consultant on-call rota, providing specialist telephone advice and supporting junior medical staff.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary hospital, community and primary care teams to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Support multidisciplinary team meetings, cancer pathways and specialist case discussions.
  • Provide supervision, teaching and educational support to undergraduate and postgraduate learners.
  • Act as an Educational Supervisor where appropriate.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and research projects.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical guidelines, care pathways and specialist palliative care services.
  • Maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD), appraisal and revalidation requirements.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise.
  • MRCP.
  • Eligibility to work as a Consultant in Palliative Medicine.

Desirable

  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register in Palliative Medicine or eligibility for CCT within six months.
  • Further relevant postgraduate degree or diploma.
  • Teaching qualification or higher qualification in Medical Education.


Experience & Skills

Essential

  • Experience delivering Specialist Palliative Medicine services.
  • Excellent leadership and multidisciplinary team-working skills.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively with management and clinical teams to improve services.
  • Evidence of teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare professionals.
  • Experience undertaking clinical audit and quality improvement.
  • Good understanding of healthcare information systems and technology.

Desirable

  • Experience in service improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to participate in the consultant on-call rota.
