An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist to join a well-established Anaesthesia department in the East of England.

The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists delivering specialist anaesthetic care for infants, children and neonates, while also contributing to adult anaesthetic services according to training and experience. The role includes participation in a dedicated 1:7 paediatric anaesthetic on-call rota, supporting emergency paediatric surgery and the stabilisation of critically ill children prior to specialist retrieval.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Deliver Consultant-led anaesthetic care for paediatric patients, including neonates, infants and children.
• Provide peri-operative assessment, anaesthesia and post-operative management for paediatric surgical patients.
• Deliver General Anaesthesia for adult patients across a range of specialities in accordance with training and experience.
• Participate in the dedicated 1:7 Paediatric Anaesthesia on-call rota.
• Support the emergency management and stabilisation of critically ill children prior to retrieval by the regional paediatric retrieval service.
• Provide anaesthesia across a wide range of paediatric surgical specialities, including neonatal surgery.
• Participate in weekly paediatric pre-operative assessment clinics.
• Work collaboratively with paediatric surgeons, neonatologists, intensivists and multidisciplinary teams.
• Contribute to departmental clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
• Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education, supervision and mentoring.
• Support research activities and contribute to national and international paediatric anaesthesia projects.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and comply with GMC and Royal College standards.
• Participate in departmental meetings and service development initiatives.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

• MBBS, MBChB or equivalent recognised medical qualification.
• Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia via CCT, CESR or equivalent European Community Rights.
• FRCA or equivalent.
• Advanced Training in Paediatric Anaesthesia (or equivalent).
• CCT in Anaesthesia (or within six months of award) or equivalent specialist qualification.

Desirable

• MD, PhD, MSc, PGDip or PGCert.
• ALS, EPLS or ATLS Instructor status (or equivalent).

Experience

Essential

• Previous NHS experience in Anaesthesia.
• Extensive Consultant-level or equivalent experience in General and Paediatric Anaesthesia.
• Experience providing peri-operative care for paediatric patients.
• Experience managing neonatal and paediatric surgical cases.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience participating in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
• Training and expertise in children's safeguarding.

Desirable

• Experience in paediatric pain management.
• Experience in neonatal anaesthesia.
• Experience in paediatric critical care.
• Experience in ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia.
• Experience in scoliosis anaesthesia.
