An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant General Physician in General Internal Medicine to join a progressive acute hospital service in Ireland.
The successful candidate will provide consultant-led care for adult medical inpatients, patients attending the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), and outpatient services, while working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, evidence-based and patient-centred care. Candidates with or without an additional medical subspecialty are encouraged to apply.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver a comprehensive Consultant-led General Internal Medicine service for adult medical patients.
  • Assess, diagnose and manage acute and complex medical conditions across inpatient, outpatient and Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) settings.
  • Participate in the assessment and management of patients referred by General Practitioners, Emergency Departments and inpatient speciality teams.
  • Provide consultant review of patients admitted through the Medical Assessment Unit to facilitate early diagnosis, treatment planning and discharge where appropriate.
  • Participate in the General Internal Medicine on-call rota, providing consultant cover for acute medical admissions.
  • Lead multidisciplinary ward rounds and work collaboratively with nursing staff, allied health professionals, pharmacists and specialist teams.
  • Provide clinical advice and consultation to colleagues across a wide range of medical specialities.
  • Supervise, support and provide educational leadership to Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs), medical students and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, patient safety initiatives and quality improvement programmes.
  • Contribute to service planning, operational development and implementation of clinical pathways.
  • Participate in Medical Board meetings, departmental meetings and service improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ensure compliance with Irish Medical Council and HSE clinical governance standards.
  • Support efficient patient flow while maintaining high standards of clinical care.


Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • Specialist Registration with the Irish Medical Council (IMC) in General Internal Medicine, or eligibility to obtain Specialist Registration before appointment.
  • Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST), CCT or an equivalent recognised specialist qualification in General Internal Medicine.
  • Eligibility to practise as a Consultant Physician in Ireland.

Desirable

  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians or an equivalent recognised postgraduate qualification.
  • Additional recognised training or qualification in a medical subspecialty.
  • Higher academic qualification such as MD, MSc or PhD.


Experience

Essential

  • Extensive Consultant-level or equivalent experience in General Internal Medicine.
  • Experience managing acute medical admissions and complex inpatient care.
  • Experience working within Medical Assessment Units or Acute Medical Units.
  • Experience delivering consultant-led inpatient and outpatient services.
  • Experience participating in multidisciplinary clinical decision-making.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring junior doctors.
  • Experience in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
  • Experience contributing to service planning and pathway development.

Desirable

  • Experience developing acute medicine services.
  • Experience in a recognised medical subspecialty.
  • Research experience or peer-reviewed publications.
