An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Speciality Doctor to join a busy and progressive Emergency Medicine department in North West England.
This post is ideal for experienced doctors looking to develop a long-term career in Emergency Medicine or gain further experience before entering speciality training. Working within a modern Emergency Department, the successful candidate will independently assess and manage adult and paediatric emergency presentations while working alongside an experienced consultant-led multidisciplinary team.
The department offers excellent opportunities for continuing professional development, teaching, audit, quality improvement and clinical leadership within an innovative and digitally enabled healthcare environment.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Independently assess, investigate and manage adult and paediatric patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
  • Work as part of a 24-hour middle-grade rota providing high-quality emergency care under consultant supervision.
  • Deliver safe, timely and evidence-based emergency treatment across a broad range of medical, surgical, paediatric and trauma presentations.
  • Assess critically ill and injured patients and initiate appropriate emergency management.
  • Participate in the management of trauma, resuscitation and acute medical emergencies.
  • Support junior doctors, locally employed doctors, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and nursing colleagues within the department.
  • Participate in departmental teaching programmes, simulation training and educational activities.
  • Undertake clinical audit, quality improvement projects and clinical governance activities.
  • Contribute to service development and support initiatives to improve patient flow, safety and quality of care.
  • Participate in continuing professional development (CPD), annual appraisal and personal development planning.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records using electronic patient management systems.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, patient-centred emergency care.
  • Comply with GMC guidance, NHS standards and departmental clinical governance requirements.


Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a licence to practise.


Desirable

  • MCEM or higher postgraduate qualification such as MRCP or an equivalent relevant qualification.


Experience

Essential

  • Minimum four years' postgraduate medical training or equivalent experience with relevant competencies.
  • At least two years of training or equivalent experience in a relevant speciality.
  • Minimum 12 months' experience working in Emergency Medicine.
  • Minimum 12 months' experience working within an NHS organisation.
  • Minimum three months' experience in Anaesthesia and/or Intensive Care Medicine.
  • Experience managing paediatric patients within General Paediatrics or Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
  • Demonstrated completion of Foundation competencies or equivalent.
  • Experience independently assessing and managing emergency presentations in adults and children.

Desirable

  • Experience in clinical skills complementary to Emergency Medicine, including procedural skills or point-of-care ultrasound.


Skills & Competencies

Essential

  • Excellent assessment, diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage acutely ill and injured patients in a fast-paced Emergency Department.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with patients, relatives and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and make safe clinical decisions under pressure.
  • Provider status in at least one of the following:
    • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
    • Advanced Life Support (ALS)
    • Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS)
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to evidence-based emergency care.

Desirable

  • Instructor status in ATLS, ALS or APLS.
  • Generic Instructor Course (GIC) qualification.


Teaching, Audit & Research

Essential

  • Previous teaching experience with medical students, junior doctors or multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to support and motivate colleagues within the clinical environment.
  • Proven participation in clinical audit.
  • Commitment to evidence-based medicine.
  • Participation in continuing professional development and appraisal.


Desirable

  • Experience using audit to implement improvements in clinical practice.
  • Previous research experience.
  • Experience teaching postgraduate doctors.
  • Evidence of leadership in education or clinical training.
