We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a dynamic Acute Medicine team in Yorkshire and Humber.
This is an exciting opportunity to work within a newly developed Acute Assessment and Frailty Unit, forming part of a major expansion of urgent and emergency care services. The purpose-built facility combines Acute Assessment, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), a High Observation Area and an 18-bed Short Stay Ward, enabling the delivery of high-quality consultant-led care in a modern clinical environment.

The Role

As Consultant in Acute Medicine, you will:
  • Provide rapid assessment and management of patients presenting with acute medical conditions.
  • Deliver consultant-led care within the Acute Assessment Unit, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service and Short Stay Ward.
  • Lead daily consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary team discussions.
  • Manage acute medical admissions from assessment through to discharge or speciality transfer.
  • Work closely with Emergency Medicine and speciality teams to ensure timely patient pathways.
  • Supervise junior doctors and Advanced Clinical Practitioners.
  • Participate in the Acute Medicine consultant rota, including evening and weekend commitments.
  • Support service development, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit and departmental leadership.
  • Develop and pursue a specialist clinical interest alongside Acute Medicine.

Person Specific

Requirements

Essential

Applicants must have:
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or expected within six months).
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification.
  • Speciality Certificate Examination (SCE) in Acute Internal Medicine.
  • Valid Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification.
  • Demonstrable commitment to Acute Medicine.
  • Ability to independently manage patients presenting with acute medical conditions.
  • Experience supervising junior medical staff.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in a busy acute environment.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.


Desirable

  • MD, PhD or other postgraduate qualification.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education.
  • Experience working in large, high-volume Acute Assessment Units.
  • Experience in Same Day Emergency Care or Ambulatory Care.
  • Experience leading service development projects.
  • Educational Supervisor experience.
  • Practice-changing clinical audit.
  • Research publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience teaching clinical courses such as ALS, IMPACT or ALERT Instructor programmes.
  • Strong leadership and service improvement experience.
