We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Consultant Neuropathologist to join a well-established Cellular and Anatomical Pathology department in North East England.
This replacement post offers an excellent opportunity to join a highly respected pathology service that delivers comprehensive diagnostic neuropathology to a large regional population. Initially offered on a part-time basis, the role will transition to a full-time appointment, providing outstanding opportunities for specialist practice, research, teaching and service development.
Applicants should have broad experience in general neuropathology, including muscle and nerve pathology, with an interest in developing laboratory-based research.

The Role

As Consultant Neuropathologist, you will:

• Deliver a comprehensive diagnostic neuropathology service.
• Report a wide range of surgical neuropathology specimens.
• Diagnose brain tumours, muscle diseases and peripheral nerve disorders.
• Perform cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examinations.
• Undertake neuropathological autopsies, including complex neurological cases.
• Provide specialist advice to clinicians and pathology colleagues.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
• Contribute to departmental clinical governance and quality assurance.
• Support audit and continuous service improvement.
• Develop laboratory-based research interests.
• Supervise and support junior doctors and pathology trainees.
• Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.

Person Specific

Requirements

Essential

Applicants must have:

• Full GMC registration with a licence to practise (or be eligible within six months).
• Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register in Neuropathology (or be within six months of CCT).
• FRCPath in Neuropathology or equivalent.
• Thorough knowledge and extensive experience in general diagnostic neuropathology.
• Expertise in surgical neuropathology, autopsy pathology, muscle pathology and nerve pathology.
• Experience working within the NHS.
• Exposure to laboratory management.
• Commitment to teaching Speciality Registrars and other healthcare professionals.
• Understanding of clinical audit and governance.
• Excellent communication and multidisciplinary working skills.

Desirable

• MRCP, MD, PhD or other postgraduate qualification.
• Significant autopsy experience.
• Formal laboratory management training.
• Experience teaching medical students.
• Active research with peer-reviewed publications.
• Experience managing laboratory-based research projects.
• Success in obtaining research funding.
• Extensive clinical audit experience.
• Strong leadership and service development skills.
