We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Gastroenterologist to join a well-established and expanding Gastroenterology team in North West England.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic, multidisciplinary department delivering high-quality acute and elective gastroenterology services. The successful candidate will contribute to comprehensive gastrointestinal care while developing a specialist interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) alongside a highly experienced consultant team.

The Role

As Consultant Gastroenterologist, you will:
  • Deliver comprehensive inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology services.
  • Provide specialist care for patients with a broad range of gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
  • Participate in advanced endoscopy services.
  • Develop a specialist interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings including IBD, upper GI, lower GI, hepatology and cancer MDTs.
  • Work collaboratively with GI surgeons, radiologists, specialist nurses and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in the Gastroenterology and GI Bleed on-call rota.
  • Contribute to General Internal Medicine (GIM) services.
  • Support service development, clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Supervise junior doctors and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Participate in teaching, audit, appraisal and continuing professional development.


About the Department

You will join a large consultant-led Gastroenterology service delivering comprehensive gastrointestinal care across a busy teaching environment.
The department provides:
  • Advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) services.
  • Hepatology services.
  • Nutritional support.
  • Gastrointestinal cancer services.
  • GI physiology services.
  • Capsule endoscopy and capsule sponge services.
  • ERCP and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS).
  • Day-case procedures including paracentesis, venesection and biologic infusions.
The service includes:
  • 33-bed dedicated Gastroenterology inpatient ward.
  • Modern JAG-accredited Endoscopy Units.
  • Multiple fully equipped endoscopy rooms across the service.
  • Weekly specialist multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Joint medical and surgical IBD clinics.
  • Close collaboration with interventional radiology and specialist GI surgery teams.

Person Specific

Requirements

Essential

Applicants must have:
  • MBBS (or equivalent medical qualification).
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via CCT, CESR or European Community Rights (or be within six months of obtaining CCT).
  • European Speciality Examination in Gastroenterology and Hepatology (ESEGH).
  • Broad experience managing Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine patients.
  • Advanced training in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
  • Expertise in diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
  • JAG Accreditation in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
  • Experience in clinical audit and quality improvement within the last three years.
  • Teaching and supervision experience.
  • Leadership and management experience.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and multidisciplinary working skills.
  • Strong IT skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.


Desirable

  • MSc, MD, PhD or equivalent higher qualification.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) Provider certification.
  • Membership of relevant professional societies.
  • Research experience including NIHR Principal or Associate Investigator training.
  • Endoscopy Training the Trainers qualification.
  • Publications or presentations in Gastroenterology or General Medicine.
  • Educational Supervisor recognition.
  • Experience developing specialist Gastroenterology services.
