We are recruiting on behalf of a leading NHS teaching organisation in the East of England for a Consultant Histopathologist, with locum applications also welcomed.

This fixed-term opportunity offers the chance to join an established department of 21 Consultant Histopathologists within a modern, purpose-built Cellular Pathology service. The department operates an oligo-specialist model, encouraging consultants to develop expertise across two to three subspecialties while working collaboratively within dedicated specialist teams. Although all subspecialty interests are welcome, experience in Breast Pathology would be advantageous.

The department has ambitious plans to expand its specialist, academic and research activities over the coming years, providing an excellent environment for consultants wishing to develop their clinical, educational and research careers. Consultants benefit from personalised and flexible working patterns, protected reporting time, digital pathology, AI-enabled reporting, and strong links with leading academic and research institutions.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-level diagnostic Histopathology services across agreed subspecialty areas.
  • Participate in an oligo-specialist reporting model across two to three subspecialties.
  • Report surgical pathology specimens while maintaining high diagnostic quality and turnaround times.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and collaborative patient management.
  • Participate in departmental clinical governance, audit, external quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support undergraduate and postgraduate education, trainee supervision and mentoring.
  • Contribute to departmental research, innovation and service development.
  • Participate in appraisal, continuing professional development and mandatory training.
  • Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues to deliver an efficient, patient-focused pathology service.
  • Support the implementation and ongoing development of digital pathology and AI-assisted reporting technologies.

 

Person Specification

Essential


Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Histopathology, or within six months of award at the time of interview.
  • Applicants trained outside the UK must demonstrate equivalence to UK CCT standards.


Experience

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK Histopathology training.
  • Experience in diagnostic Histopathology practice.
  • Active participation in clinical governance and audit.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to developing an appropriate subspecialty interest.
