We are recruiting for a Consultant Medical Microbiologist to join an established team of three Consultant Microbiologists within a leading NHS organisation in South West England.
This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and expand microbiology and infection services as the department broadens its clinical offering. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with joint training in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology who are keen to drive service transformation, innovation, and high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver a comprehensive clinical Microbiology, Virology and Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) service.
- Provide expert clinical advice on infection diagnosis, management and antimicrobial therapy.
- Lead on infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship and infection management across the organisation.
- Provide regular clinical liaison with Intensive Care, Haematology/Oncology, medical and surgical teams, primary care and specialist services.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings including Orthopaedics, Cardiology, Diabetic Foot, Medicines Management, Sepsis and Antibiotic Working Groups.
- Contribute to Infection Prevention & Control committees, outbreak management and water safety programmes.
- Support the development of departmental policies, clinical guidelines and standard operating procedures.
- Supervise diagnostic laboratory services, including result authorisation, quality assurance and service development.
- Participate in laboratory accreditation, quality improvement and external quality assurance programmes.
- Develop specialist clinical interests aligned with departmental and regional service needs.
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, educational supervision and continuing medical education.
- Undertake clinical audit, research and service improvement projects.
- Participate in the consultant on-call rota and provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues during leave.
Person Specification
Essential
Qualifications
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Medical Microbiology (or eligible within six months of interview).
- CCT (or equivalent) in Medical Microbiology or evidence of equivalent specialist training.
- FRCPath (UK) or equivalent qualification.
Experience
- Broad clinical experience in Medical Microbiology.
- Extensive knowledge of evidence-based microbiology practice.
- Experience in Infection Prevention & Control.
- Ability to independently deliver consultant-level microbiology services.
- Strong clinical liaison experience with multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to manage diagnostic laboratory services and prioritise workload effectively.

- Experience with Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT).
- Management or leadership experience.
- Experience leading service development projects.
- Publications or research activity within Microbiology or Infectious Diseases.
- Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
