Consultant Rheumatologist
Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Rheumatologist to join a well-established and expanding Rheumatology service in Scotland. This permanent consultant post offers the opportunity to work within a highly supportive multidisciplinary team while contributing to the continued development of Rheumatology services alongside General Medicine. The department has a strong reputation for delivering high-quality patient care, education, research and service innovation, with excellent opportunities to develop specialist interests.
The successful candidate will join an experienced team of consultants, specialist nurses and allied health professionals delivering comprehensive outpatient and inpatient Rheumatology services across the region. Main Responsibilities
- Deliver a comprehensive Consultant Rheumatology service across the region.
- Provide high-quality outpatient and inpatient Rheumatology care.
- Participate in General Internal Medicine and on-call commitments as agreed within the job plan.
- Diagnose and manage the full spectrum of inflammatory and autoimmune rheumatic diseases.
- Lead multidisciplinary management alongside specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and podiatrists.
- Contribute to biologic therapies, osteoporosis services and musculoskeletal ultrasound where appropriate.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support the continued development and expansion of Rheumatology services.
- Supervise junior medical staff and contribute to departmental leadership.
- Participate in annual appraisal, job planning and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
About the Service
The Rheumatology Department provides a comprehensive regional service with dedicated outpatient clinics and inpatient care. Services include inflammatory arthritis clinics, biologic screening and monitoring, osteoporosis management, musculoskeletal ultrasound, connective tissue disease services and multidisciplinary rehabilitation. The department works closely with Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Vascular Surgery and other specialities to deliver integrated patient care.
Acute & General Medicine
In addition to Rheumatology, the successful candidate will contribute to General Medicine services within a modern acute hospital environment featuring:
- Combined Assessment Unit.
- Emergency Assessment Centre.
- Critical Care Unit.
- Comprehensive acute medical services.
- Collaborative multidisciplinary working across multiple specialities.
Teaching, Research & Professional Development
The department has a strong academic and educational culture, providing opportunities to:
- Teach undergraduate medical students.
- Participate in postgraduate education and training.
- Supervise junior doctors.
- Deliver educational sessions for multidisciplinary staff.
- Participate in clinical audit and governance.
- Contribute to research programmes and service development.

Person Specification
Requirements
Essential
- Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Rheumatology (or within six months of CCT).
- Appropriate Royal College Membership.
- Broad clinical experience in Rheumatology.
- Commitment to delivering high-quality patient-centred care.
- Ability to manage patients independently.
- Experience in multidisciplinary working.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to clinical governance, audit and service improvement.
- Ability to teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
Desirable
- Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent).
- Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education.
- Management and leadership experience.
- Evidence of research activity and peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience implementing service improvements.
- Advanced teaching qualifications.
- Evidence of completed audit leading to service improvement.
