An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist to join a growing oncology service in the East of England. This is a senior consultant role with a specific focus on Upper GI cancers, alongside shared responsibility for the treatment and management of Lung cancer and Mesothelioma. The successful candidate will be expected to play a key role in delivering high-quality oncological care, supporting multidisciplinary cancer pathways, and helping to develop the service further in line with rising demand and evolving treatment pathways.

The appointee will act as Lead Oncologist for Upper GI cancers and will share responsibility for Lung cancer and Mesothelioma. With increasing referrals, expanding use of multiple lines of chemotherapy, monoclonal antibodies and immunotherapy, and a strong emphasis on research and service development, this post offers the chance to make a meaningful impact across both tumour groups.

Main Responsibilities

• Lead the Clinical Oncology service for Upper GI cancers.
• Share responsibility for the treatment and management of Lung cancer and Mesothelioma.
• Deliver high-quality systemic anti-cancer treatment and radiotherapy planning/review for patients within these tumour groups.
• Work closely with colleagues across the regional cancer network to deliver local cancer services.
• Participate in and contribute to all relevant multidisciplinary team meetings, including Lung and Upper GI MDTs.
• Support the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) and the inpatient oncology ward service.
• Contribute to clinical trials recruitment, research activity and service development.
• Help develop clinical protocols, care bundles, governance and quality improvement initiatives.
• Teach, supervise and support junior doctors, trainees and medical students.
• Take an active role in leadership, audit, CPD and wider departmental development.

About the Role

This is a 10 PA Consultant Clinical Oncology post within an established oncology service in the East of England, combining tumour-site leadership, systemic therapy, radiotherapy planning, acute oncology, inpatient oncology, research and service development. The successful candidate will join an integrated cancer service and work across both local and tertiary care pathways to ensure patients receive high-quality, coordinated oncology care.

Department & Service Structure

The successful candidate will join a friendly and established Oncology Department within the Division of Medicine. The service sits within an integrated Oncology, Haematology and Palliative Care Unit, providing a broad and well-supported oncology infrastructure. Facilities include:

• A Cancer Care and Treatment Unit
• A 12-bedded inpatient oncology/haematology ward
• A Chemotherapy Suite with 12 treatment chairs
• A Day Treatment Suite
• A Cancer Wellbeing and Support Centre for patients and families

The wider oncology team includes consultant oncologists, specialist doctors, registrars and junior doctors, with strong links to regional tertiary cancer centres for radiotherapy, specialist surgery and access to advanced trials.

Main Clinical Duties

The post holder will be expected to:

• Work with colleagues across the regional cancer network to provide a local cancer service for Lung and Upper GI cancers
• Participate in all relevant multidisciplinary meetings, including review of histology and radiology
• Provide clinical leadership in radiotherapy and oncology
• Actively participate in the consultant-led ward service for oncology inpatients
• Support the Acute Oncology Service for both inpatients and outpatients
• Contribute to ongoing research projects using the available clinical facilities
• Support the development of clinical protocols, guidelines and concise care bundles
• Take part in teaching, supervision, governance, audit and service improvement

Teaching, Training & Governance

The successful candidate will also be expected to:

• Teach and train junior doctors, medical students and allied healthcare professionals
• Act as a clinical/educational supervisor where appropriate
• Participate actively in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement
• Contribute to the development of clinical pathways, protocols and service redesign
• Maintain an active commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
• Support wider leadership and departmental development initiatives

Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• MRCP Part 1 and Part 2
• FRCR
• Full GMC registration and licence to practise
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register, or eligibility for entry / within 6 months of CCT or CESR at the time of interview
• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT in Clinical Oncology
• Wide experience in prescribing chemotherapy, including e-prescribing
• Experience of Acute Oncology
• Ability to meet the Specialist Generic Capabilities Framework criteria
• Strong clinical, communication, leadership and multidisciplinary working skills

Desirable

• Postgraduate thesis awarded or pending
• Advanced communication skills training
