An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Medical Oncologist to join a developing oncology service in the East of England as the Lead Medical Oncology Consultant for Breast and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) cancers. This is a key consultant post focused on delivering high-quality systemic anti-cancer therapy, leading multidisciplinary care for these tumour groups, and helping shape the continued growth of the oncology service. The successful candidate will take the lead on systemic treatment for breast cancer and play a major role in managing and developing the HPB oncology pathway.

Main Responsibilities

• Lead the Medical Oncology service for Breast and HPB cancers
• Act as the lead consultant for systemic treatment in breast cancer
• Provide expert management of patients with breast and hepatobiliary malignancies
• Work closely with colleagues across the cancer network to deliver a local cancer service for patients with these tumour groups
• Participate in and lead multidisciplinary team working, including breast, HPB, radiology and oncology/palliative MDTs
• Provide consultant-led support to the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) and the inpatient oncology ward service
• Prescribe and oversee systemic anti-cancer therapy, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, using e-prescribing systems
• Contribute to clinical trials recruitment, research activity and service expansion
• Support the ongoing development of clinical protocols, guidelines, governance and quality improvement initiatives
• Take an active role in teaching, supervision, appraisal, leadership and service development

About the Role

This is a senior consultant position within an integrated oncology service, offering the opportunity to combine site-specific leadership, systemic anti-cancer therapy delivery, inpatient oncology input, acute oncology work, MDT leadership, teaching and service development. The successful candidate will work as part of an enthusiastic oncology department and will have a visible role in the strategic development of breast and HPB oncology across the service.

The post sits within an integrated Oncology, Haematology and Palliative Care Unit, which includes:

• A Cancer Care and Treatment Unit
• A 12-bedded inpatient ward
• A Chemotherapy Suite with 12 treatment chairs
• A Day Treatment Suite
• A Cancer Wellbeing and Support Centre for patients and families

Breast & HPB Oncology Focus

This role is specifically designed around Breast and HPB Oncology. The successful consultant will be expected to take a leadership role across both tumour streams, including:

• Breast oncology clinics, new patient and follow-up activity
• Oversight of systemic treatment planning for breast cancer
• Participation in the Breast MDT
• Leadership and development of the HPB oncology pathway
• Participation in the HPB MDT and dedicated HPB clinic
• Working closely with surgeons, radiologists, palliative care teams and tertiary oncology centres to deliver coordinated cancer care

Clinical Duties

The post holder will be expected to:

• Work with colleagues across the regional cancer network to provide a local cancer service for breast and HPB tumours.
• Participate in all relevant multidisciplinary meetings, reviewing histology, imaging and treatment planning.
• Provide clinical leadership in the role of Breast and HPB Lead.
• Participate in the consultant-led ward service for oncology inpatients.
• Support the Acute Oncology Service for both inpatients and outpatients.
• Contribute to ongoing research projects using available clinical and laboratory facilities.
• Support and supervise junior doctors and trainees within the department.
• Participate fully in clinical governance, audit, service development and CPD.

Service Development & Leadership

The appointed consultant will be expected to contribute to the department's ongoing improvement programme, including:

• Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT)
• Cost Improvement Programme (CIP)
• Implementation of evidence-based new ways of working

Consultants are also encouraged to pursue wider leadership development, including fellowship of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.

Teaching, Training & Governance

The successful candidate will also be expected to:

• Teach and train junior doctors, medical students and allied healthcare professionals
• Act as a clinical/educational supervisor where appropriate
• Participate actively in clinical governance, audit and service improvement
• Support development of clinical pathways, protocols and care bundles
• Take part in annual appraisal, CPD and wider departmental development
• Contribute to a culture of safe, evidence-based and patient-centred oncology practice

Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• MRCP Part 1 and Part 2
• Full GMC registration and licence to practise
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register, or eligibility for entry / within 6 months of CCT or CESR at the time of interview
• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT in Medical Oncology
• Wide experience in prescribing chemotherapy, including e-prescribing
• Experience of Acute Oncology
• Ability to meet the Specialist Generic Capabilities Framework criteria
• Strong multidisciplinary working, leadership and communication skills
