An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Neurophysiologist to join a growing Clinical Neurophysiology service in Wales. This is a new consultant post within a department that provides a full range of neurophysiological investigations for both adult and paediatric patients, supporting scheduled and unscheduled, inpatient and outpatient, intensive and critical care pathways. The service delivers a broad diagnostic portfolio including EEG, prolonged EEGs, sleep-deprived and ambulatory EEGs, inpatient and home video telemetry, EMG, nerve conduction studies and evoked potentials. The successful appointee will join an established multidisciplinary team comprising one existing consultant, a clinical service manager, highly skilled clinical physiologists, specialised physiologists and trainee clinical scientists, within a wider neurosciences network.

Main Responsibilities

• Provide a consultant clinical neurophysiology service for adult and paediatric patients, covering the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of neurological illness
• Deliver and support a broad range of neurophysiological investigations, including EEG, ambulatory EEG, video telemetry, EMG, nerve conduction studies and evoked potentials
• Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the wider multi-professional team, maintaining responsibility for patients under your care and supporting appropriate delegation and staff development
• Contribute to the safe, efficient and effective running of the service in line with operational policies, governance frameworks and the wider service plan
• Participate in clinical governance, risk management, audit and service improvement
• Support delivery of performance targets, including referral-to-treatment times
• Provide advice and guidance to referrers and contribute to the development of neurophysiology pathways
• Participate in annual appraisal, revalidation, job planning and CPD
• Take part in teaching, training and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate staff and trainees
• Contribute to research and innovation activity where appropriate within a university-linked environment

About the Service

The Clinical Neurophysiology Department is an integral part of the wider Neurosciences network and supports both adult and paediatric planned care pathways. The service provides inpatient and outpatient diagnostics across a wide range of cases and is supported by an established neurophysiology team, administrative staff, and a trainee pipeline. The post has a 10-session job plan, with a balance of direct clinical care and SPA time, and a provisional timetable that includes specialist EMG clinics, EEG/EP reporting, MDT attendance, ward liaison, urgent reporting, audit, governance, research and CPD activity.

The service also sits within a strong educational and academic environment, with close links to Swansea University Medical School, Cardiff Medical Education Partners, and a wider Health Board teaching infrastructure. Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

• Full GMC registration and licence to practise
• On the GMC Specialist Register as a specialist in Neurophysiology, or eligible within the required timeframe
• Evidence of the ability to develop effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams
• Evidence of working with management and clinical colleagues to improve a service
• Experience or evidence of development and commissioning of neurophysiology services
• Strong leadership skills and the ability to take responsibility when required
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with patients, relatives, colleagues and staff
• Understanding of teamworking, prudent healthcare principles, clinical governance and service improvement
• Evidence of teaching and training of postgraduate and/or undergraduate clinical staff
• Commitment to continuous improvement, adaptability, and the ability to work effectively under pressure

Desirable

• Further relevant degree or diploma
• Teaching qualification or higher qualification in medical education
• Evidence of initiating, progressing and completing the audit
• Experience in research on neurological conditions
• Specific experience in relevant neurological conditions/subspecialty practice
• Understanding of information systems and technology
• Enthusiasm to take a lead role in clinical development and service improvement
