An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a large and developing Acute Medicine service in Greater London. This is a chance to be part of a forward-thinking department undergoing significant investment and expansion, including the development of a brand-new Acute Medical Unit to support an already busy, high-acuity medical intake. The service is looking for enthusiastic, collaborative, and motivated consultants who want to help shape the future of acute medical care and deliver outstanding patient outcomes.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will participate fully in the provision of Acute Medicine services and will contribute to the Acute Medicine rota in place at the time of appointment. Key responsibilities include:
• Managing patients across the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and the wider acute medical take
• Providing consultant-led assessment, review, and treatment of patients presenting with acute medical emergencies
• Supporting the delivery of care within a busy acute assessment service with high daily referral volumes
• Participating in acute medicine on-call and assessment rotas on a pro rata basis
• Contributing to the continued development of Acute Medicine pathways and service redesign
• Working collaboratively with nursing, therapy, and wider multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, efficient, patient-centred care
• Participating in clinical governance, audit, teaching, research, and quality improvement activities
• Supporting undergraduate and postgraduate education, including the teaching of medical and nursing staff
• Potentially contributing to Medical High Dependency Unit cover, depending on prior experience and competencies.

About the Acute Medicine Service

This is a well-established Acute Medicine service with substantial consultant investment and a strong reputation for innovation, education, and multidisciplinary working. The department manages a very busy acute care department and has continued to expand its capacity and infrastructure to meet rising demand.

The service includes:
• Three Acute Medical Unit wards with a large number of acute assessment beds
• A high-volume Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) seeing a significant proportion of the medical take
• A Medical High Dependency Unit (MHDU) with Level 2 care capability
• Dedicated consultant presence across acute medicine services, seven days a week
• A structured model of consultant cover across the acute floor, AMU, SDEC and post-take services
• Cross-site working opportunities as part of a wider Acute Medicine service.

Acute Medical Unit (AMU)

The Acute Medical Units provide consultant-led assessment and short-stay management for patients admitted under Acute Medicine. Patients remain under the care of the acute team during their time on the unit, allowing continuity and focused consultant input. The service delivers direct hands-on consultant cover for extended hours across the week and is supported by registrars, junior doctors, matrons, therapists, and administrative staff.

Teaching, Research & Development

The trust has a strong culture of education and research, with extensive postgraduate teaching infrastructure and active clinical research programmes. Consultants in Acute Medicine are expected to contribute to teaching and are supported in developing interests in service innovation, quality improvement, and research. There are also opportunities to engage in clinical governance leadership, educational supervision, and broader departmental development work.
