Psychiatrist - Locum Consultant
Apply nowThis locum consultant position offers the opportunity to provide expert psychiatric care for adults with intellectual disabilities who require specialist forensic mental health services. The successful candidate will work within a consultant-led multidisciplinary team, delivering highly specialised assessment, treatment, risk management, and forensic psychiatric care across inpatient, prison, outpatient, and community settings. The role combines clinical leadership, service development, medico-legal expertise, teaching, and multidisciplinary collaboration within a nationally recognised tertiary service.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
The Consultant Psychiatrist will:
• Provide consultant-led psychiatric assessment and treatment for adults with intellectual disabilities and complex mental health needs
• Deliver specialist forensic psychiatric services within secure and community settings
• Lead multidisciplinary care planning and treatment programmes
• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric, forensic, and risk assessments
• Manage complex dual-diagnosis and treatment-resistant cases
• Undertake medico-legal assessments, reports, and court-related work
• Participate in admissions, referrals, and patient triage processes
• Provide consultation and liaison support to mental health services nationally
• Deliver specialist prison in-reach psychiatric services where required
• Participate in consultant on-call rotas
• Lead risk assessment and risk management strategies for high-risk patients
• Contribute to governance, service development, and quality improvement initiatives
• Participate in clinical audit, research, and service evaluation activities
• Supervise and support Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs)
• Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
• Ensure compliance with clinical governance, regulatory, and professional standards
