An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Physician in Diabetes & Endocrinology to join a well-established multidisciplinary medical service in Northern Ireland.

This Consultant post offers the opportunity to deliver high-quality Diabetes, Endocrinology, and General Internal Medicine care across inpatient and outpatient settings, while contributing to specialist diabetes pathways, endocrine services, clinical leadership, education, and multidisciplinary service development.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative team of consultants focused on delivering modern, evidence-based patient care across acute and specialist medical services.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

The Consultant Physician will:

• Provide consultant-led Diabetes & Endocrinology assessment and treatment
• Deliver specialist outpatient diabetes and endocrine clinics
• Manage inpatient diabetes and endocrine referrals
• Participate in General Internal Medicine commitments and on-call rotas
• Support complex Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes management
• Manage endocrine disorders, including thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and metabolic bone disease
• Support insulin pump and diabetes technology services
• Contribute to diabetic foot and multidisciplinary diabetes pathways
• Participate in endocrine and diabetes MDT meetings
• Provide clinical leadership within multidisciplinary teams
• Support service development and pathway improvement initiatives
• Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities
• Supervise junior doctors and trainees
• Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
• Support research, innovation, and evidence-based practice

• Young adult and transition diabetes pathways
• Antenatal diabetes services
• Endocrine MDT services
• General Internal Medicine services

The multidisciplinary team includes:

• Consultant Physicians
• Diabetes Specialist Nurses
• Endocrine Nurse Specialists
• Specialist Dietitians
• Podiatrists
• Psychologists
• Junior Doctors and Medical Trainees
• Allied Health Professionals
• Administrative and support staff

The service works closely with:

• Acute medicine teams

Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

• Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
• MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
• Eligible for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Diabetes & Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine
• CCT, CESR, or equivalent specialist qualification
• Minimum 1 year NHS experience
• Excellent clinical skills in Diabetes & Endocrinology
• Broad experience in General Internal Medicine
• Ability to manage insulin pump and diabetes technology services
• Strong multidisciplinary team working ability
• Experience in clinical governance and audit
• Excellent communication and leadership skills
• Commitment to teaching and service development

Desirable

• MD, PhD, or higher postgraduate qualification
• Sub-speciality interest in antenatal diabetes
• Experience in adolescent or transition diabetes services
• Research, audit publication, or presentation experience
• Leadership or management training experience
• Service development and quality improvement involvement
• Teaching and supervision experience
