An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Anaesthetist with a subspecialty interest in Critical Care to join a well-established Anaesthetics and Intensive Care team in the East of England.
The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of high-quality Anaesthesia and Critical Care services across elective and emergency pathways while supporting ongoing service development and innovation within the department.
The role includes:
- Elective and emergency anaesthesia
- Intensive Care Unit (ITU) responsibilities
- Participation in Critical Care on-call rota
- Teaching and supervision
- Audit, governance, and quality improvement
- Opportunities in leadership, research, and education
Main Duties of the Role
Clinical Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Provide Consultant-led Anaesthetic services for elective and emergency surgery
- Deliver Consultant-level Critical Care services collaboratively within the ITU team
- Participate in the ITU on-call rota (currently 1:8)
- Maintain high standards of safe patient care in accordance with GMC guidance
- Support the delivery of efficient and effective perioperative and critical care services
- Work flexibly across theatres, critical care, and emergency pathways
Department & Clinical Exposure
The Anaesthetic and Critical Care department offers extensive exposure to:
- General Anaesthesia
- Critical Care Medicine
- Regional Anaesthesia
- Obstetric Anaesthesia
- Paediatric Anaesthesia
- Trauma and Orthopaedics
- Day Surgery
- Acute and Chronic Pain
- Difficult Airway Management
- Emergency and perioperative care
The department consists of an experienced multidisciplinary consultant team with strong involvement in:
- Education
- Clinical governance
- Research and innovation
- Regional training programmes
Teaching, Education & Research
The appointee will:
- Teach and supervise junior doctors and trainees
- Support undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
- Participate in simulation, departmental teaching, and clinical supervision
- Contribute to research and innovation activities
- Engage in audit, appraisal, governance, and CPD programmes
Service Development & Leadership
The successful candidate will contribute to:
- Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT)
- Clinical governance initiatives
- Service redesign and quality improvement
- Evidence-based pathway development

Person Specification
Requirements
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- FRCA or recognised equivalent
- FFICM or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthesia or within 6 months of CCT at interview date
- Clinical training equivalent to UK CCT in Anaesthetics
- Wide experience in:
- Anaesthesia
- Critical Care Medicine
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Strong multidisciplinary teamwork skills
- Excellent communication and clinical leadership abilities
Desirable
- Experience in regional anaesthetic techniques
- Teaching or supervision qualifications
- Research and audit involvement
- Leadership or governance experience
- Interest in innovation and service development
