An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Haematologist to join a well-established and progressive Haematology department in the East of England.

The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive clinical and laboratory Haematology service, with opportunities to develop a specialist interest through dedicated weekly sessions at a tertiary referral centre. The role includes exposure to advanced haemato-oncology services, multidisciplinary working, and specialist clinics.

Main Duties of the Role

Clinical Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient Haematology services
  • Manage patients attending:
    • New clinics
    • Follow-up clinics
    • Chemotherapy/day units
  • Provide advice regarding:
    • Blood film morphology
    • Bone marrow interpretation
    • Clotting and bleeding disorders
    • Blood product administration
  • Conduct regular ward rounds and inpatient reviews
  • Participate in Haematology on-call services
  • Support anticoagulation and coagulation services
  • Deliver telephone follow-up clinics and specialist haematology clinics
  • Participate in haemato-oncology multidisciplinary meetings (MDTs)

Specialist Interest Development

The role includes:

  • 1 day per week at a tertiary referral centre to develop a specialist interest
  • Opportunities in:
    • Myeloma
    • Acute leukaemia
    • Lymphoma
    • Myeloproliferative disorders
    • Stem cell transplant follow-up
    • Advanced haemato-oncology pathways

Candidates with appropriate experience may also contribute to specialist MDT leadership and advanced service development.

Service Development & Quality Improvement

The appointed consultant will contribute to:

  • Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT)
  • Cost Improvement Programmes (CIP)
  • Clinical governance and audit
  • Evidence-based pathway redesign
  • Quality improvement initiatives
  • Development of clinical protocols and care pathways

Teaching, Training & Research

The post holder will:

  • Supervise junior doctors and speciality trainees
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Act as educational/clinical supervisor where appropriate
  • Support multidisciplinary education programmes
  • Participate in research, audit, and CPD activities
  • Contribute to departmental educational meetings and governance activities

Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP Part 1 and Part 2
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Haematology or within 6 months of:
    • CCT, or
    • CESR on the interview date
  • Clinical training equivalent to UK CCT in Haematology or General Internal Medicine
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • Strong experience in:
    • Clinical Haematology
    • Laboratory Haematology
    • Blood film morphology
    • Haemato-oncology services
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams

Desirable

  • Higher degree in:
    • Clinical research
    • Medical education
    • Management
  • Research publications
  • Leadership or service redesign experience
  • Specialist haemato-oncology interest
  • Experience in audit and governance
  • Teaching qualifications or educational supervision experience
