Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Stroke Specialist Consultant to join a progressive and high-performing stroke service in South West England. This department is recognised for innovation, rapid stroke pathways, collaborative multidisciplinary working, and excellent patient outcomes.
The service has been commended for achieving some of the fastest scanning times in the country and thrombolysis rates above regional and national averages through participation in national quality initiatives.
This role is ideal for a clinician seeking a dynamic consultant-level post with exposure to hyperacute stroke medicine, rehabilitation, TIA services, stroke research, education, and leadership opportunities.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-led care across the stroke pathway.
- Rotational cover of:
- Hyperacute Stroke Unit
- Acute Stroke Ward
- Stroke Rehabilitation Ward
- Run daily TIA clinics.
- Provide emergency department "front door" stroke assessments.
- Make reperfusion decisions, including thrombolysis and thrombectomy pathways.
- Conduct outpatient stroke follow-up clinics.
- Participate in a 1:6 on-call rota including weekends.
Acute Stroke Leadership
- Rapid assessment of suspected stroke presentations.
- Immediate decision-making regarding thrombolysis.
- Liaison with neuroradiology and emergency teams.
- Hyperacute pathway optimisation.
Rehabilitation & Recovery
- Support multidisciplinary rehabilitation planning.
- Work closely with Early Supported Discharge teams.
- Assist transition from acute care to community recovery services.
Multidisciplinary Working
You will work closely with:
- Advanced Clinical Stroke Practitioners
- Stroke Specialist Nurses
- Emergency Department clinicians
- Neuroradiologists
- Neurologists
- Therapists
- Paramedics
- Research teams
Person Specification
Requirements
Essential
- GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- CCT in Stroke Medicine
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Minimum 12 months of recent experience managing stroke patients
- Experience in hyperacute reperfusion pathways
- Ability to independently manage complex stroke cases
- Strong MDT leadership skills
- Commitment to governance and patient safety
Desirable
- Higher degree (MD / MSc / PhD)
- Stroke research experience
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Experience as Principal Investigator
- Formal management training
- Educational supervision experience
- Stroke simulation teaching experience
- Specialist rehabilitation skills (e.g. Botox services)
