An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist in CAMHS Inpatient Services to join a highly regarded mental health service in South West England. This role offers the chance to help shape and develop a brand-new purpose-built 8-bed High Intensity Environment / PICU service alongside an established adolescent inpatient unit.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with an experienced multidisciplinary team and another substantive CAMHS Consultant, providing expert psychiatric care for children and young people with complex mental health needs.

Main Duties of the Job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant psychiatric leadership within inpatient CAMHS services.
  • Conduct psychiatric assessments, diagnoses, and treatment planning for young people with complex presentations.
  • Manage detained patients under the Mental Health Act where required.
  • Participate in ward rounds, CPA reviews, family meetings, and discharge planning.
  • Deliver tribunal reports and medico-legal documentation.
  • Support safe admissions, risk management, and crisis intervention.
  • Help develop and operationalise the new CAMHS PICU/High-Intensity Unit.

Leadership & Service Development

  • Lead and support multidisciplinary teams.
  • Contribute to transformation programmes and pathway redesign.
  • Participate in governance, quality improvement, and service innovation.

Teaching & Supervision

  • Supervise junior doctors and trainees.
  • Support the teaching of medical students and postgraduate trainees.
  • Provide educational leadership within the department.

Requirements

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCPsych or equivalent recognised qualification
  • On the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT
  • Specialist registration in Psychiatry
  • Section 12 approved
  • Approved Clinician status
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • Excellent knowledge in CAMHS psychiatry
  • Strong multidisciplinary team working experience
  • Ability to work under the MHA and MCA frameworks
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

Desirable

  • Higher degree in education, management, or research
  • Additional clinical qualifications
  • Experience outside psychiatry (medicine / GP)
  • Broad specialist or sub-specialist CAMHS experience
  • Previous management experience
  • Published audit or research work
  • Educational supervisor experience
