An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Intensive Outreach Pathway within Core Community Mental Health Services in Greater London.

This substantive 0.6 WTE post has been created through new investment to support the transformation of community mental health services in line with the NHS Long Term Plan. The successful candidate will provide senior psychiatric leadership across intensive outreach pathways, working closely with GPs, multidisciplinary teams, housing, social care, and wider mental health services.

Main Duties of the Job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant leadership within the Intensive Outreach Pathway.
  • Support diagnosis, formulation, treatment planning, and medication reviews.
  • Contribute to Dialog+ care planning, safety plans, crisis planning, and self-management strategies.
  • Undertake direct psychiatric assessments and follow-up where clinically required.
  • Assist with triage and prioritisation of new referrals.
  • Carry out Mental Health Act assessments and domiciliary visits when necessary.
  • Manage complex presentations using a bio-psycho-social model.

Primary Care Integration

  • Provide specialist advice and support to GPs and practice staff.
  • Deliver case discussions, joint consultations, and bespoke training.
  • Strengthen pathways between primary and secondary mental health services.
  • Work closely with Talking Therapies and community providers.

MDT / Partnership Working

  • Collaborate with community MDTs, housing, social care, voluntary agencies, and carers.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences for complex patients.
  • Promote joined-up patient-centred care pathways.

Leadership / Governance

  • Participate in management meetings and service planning.
  • Lead and contribute to audit and quality improvement programmes.
  • Support pathway redesign and performance improvement.
  • Assist with incident reviews and complaints if required.

Teaching / Professional Development

  • Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Supervise junior staff and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Maintain CPD, appraisal, and mandatory training.

Person specification

Requirements

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months
  • Approved Clinician status (or achievable within 3 months)
  • Section 12 Approval (or achievable within 3 months)
  • Excellent psychiatric clinical knowledge
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to manage complexity and uncertainty
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams
  • Basic IT skills, including EPR systems

Desirable

  • Higher degree in education/research/management
  • Open Dialogue Training
  • Additional clinical qualifications
  • Broad specialist or subspecialist NHS experience
  • Research or service evaluation experience
  • Publications/presentations/awards
  • Experience leading audits with measurable change
  • Data gathering and management experience
