An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Medical Oncologist with expertise in Breast and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) cancers to join an expanding oncology service in the East of England.
The successful candidate will lead systemic anti-cancer treatment services for Breast and HPB malignancies, ensuring delivery of high-quality oncological care while contributing to strategic service development, innovation, and multidisciplinary working.
This post offers involvement in modern chemotherapy and immunotherapy pathways, research, regional cancer collaboration, and consultant-led inpatient/outpatient oncology care.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive consultant-led Medical Oncology care for Breast and HPB cancers.
- Lead systemic treatment pathways, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies.
- Manage new and follow-up oncology outpatient clinics.
- Participate in consultant-led ward rounds and Acute Oncology Services.
- Prescribe systemic anti-cancer therapies, including e-prescribing systems.
- Participate in Breast MDT, HPB MDT, radiology MDT, and oncology MDT meetings.
- Ensure evidence-based treatment planning and continuity of care.
Leadership / Service Development
- Act as Lead Consultant for Breast & HPB Oncology services.
- Support ongoing programmes, including:
- GIRFT
- Cost Improvement Programmes (CIP)
- Modern evidence-based pathways
- Expand oncology capacity to meet rising demand.
- Contribute to service redesign and cancer pathway optimisation.
Teaching / Governance / Research
- Supervise junior doctors and trainees.
- Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Participate in audit, appraisal, CPD, governance, and quality improvement.
- Contribute to clinical trials recruitment and oncology research activity.
- Support educational supervision and departmental development.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- MRCP Part 1 & Part 2
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of CCT/CESR
- Clinical training equivalent to UK CCT in Medical Oncology
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Desirable
- FRCR (for Clinical Oncology pathway candidates)
- Postgraduate thesis / higher academic qualification
Experience
Essential
- Wide experience in prescribing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies
- Experience using E-prescribing systems
- Acute Oncology experience
- Breast cancer systemic therapy management
- HPB oncology management
- MDT participation and consultant leadership experience
- Audit and service improvement involvement
