An excellent opportunity has arisen for two Locum Consultant General Physicians with an interest in Acute Medicine to join a forward-thinking Acute Medicine service in Wales. These appointments aim to strengthen and transform acute medical pathways, enhance patient flow, and deliver high-quality urgent and emergency care.
The successful candidates will play a key leadership role within the Acute Medical Assessment Unit, supporting innovation, service redesign, and development of modern Acute Medicine models, including Same Day Emergency Care. Applicants with 1 year of NHS experience are encouraged to apply.
Main Duties of the Job
- Provide Consultant-led Acute Medicine services within the Acute Medical Assessment Unit.
- Deliver senior clinical decision-making for acutely unwell medical patients.
- Lead daily assessment, review, and management of patients admitted through emergency pathways.
- Oversee the medical intake and ensure safe, timely patient flow.
- Participate in the Acute Physician out-of-hours and on-call rota.
- Support the development and expansion of Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) services.
- Work collaboratively with the Emergency Department, speciality teams, frailty services, and community pathways.
- Develop new clinical care pathways aligned to urgent care transformation.
- Contribute to the management of deteriorating patients and sepsis pathways.
- Supervise junior doctors and multidisciplinary staff.
- Participate in teaching, appraisal, governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support integrated cross-organisational models of care.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC Registration
- Licence to Practise
- MRCP or equivalent
- On the GMC Specialist Register in Acute Medicine and General Internal Medicine, or eligible within 6 months of interview
Desirable
- Higher degree (MD / PhD / MSc)
- Teaching qualification / Medical Education qualification
Experience
Essential
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Previous NHS Consultant or senior registrar level experience
- Broad experience in Acute Medicine and General Internal Medicine
- Evidence of multidisciplinary team working
- Experience in improving clinical services and pathways
- Teaching and training of undergraduate/postgraduate staff
- Experience managing acute admissions and medical take
Desirable
- Development and commissioning of services
- Research experience in General Internal Medicine / Acute Medicine
- Experience in Same Day Emergency Care
- Experience in sepsis or deteriorating patient pathways
