An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Substantive Consultant in Anaesthetics to join a progressive and supportive healthcare organisation in Scotland. This permanent Consultant post is ideal for an experienced Anaesthetist with a broad anaesthetic practice and proven capability across perioperative medicine, critical care, obstetrics and paediatrics.
The successful candidate will join an established department delivering high-quality anaesthetic services across elective and emergency pathways. This role includes a significant daytime commitment to critical care, theatre anaesthesia, and participation in the consultant on-call rota.

Main Duties of the Job
- Deliver Consultant-led anaesthetic care across elective and emergency surgical services.
- Provide safe perioperative management for patients undergoing a broad range of procedures.
- Undertake sessions within Critical Care (CCU) services, including high-acuity patient management.
- Support obstetric anaesthesia services, including the labour ward and emergency obstetric cases.
- Provide paediatric anaesthesia cover as part of departmental service requirements.
- Participate in a non-resident consultant on-call rota (currently 1:6 with prospective cover).
- Work collaboratively with surgical, maternity, emergency medicine and multidisciplinary teams.
- Supervise Speciality Doctors, trainees and junior medical staff.
- Participate in clinical governance, morbidity review, audit and service improvement initiatives.
- Deliver teaching to trainees, medical students and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Contribute to departmental research, innovation and continuous professional development.
- Maintain the highest standards of patient safety, governance and evidence-based practice.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Primary Medical Qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
- Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthesia, or eligible within 6 months
- CCT / CESR / Equivalent Specialist Recognition
Experience
Essential
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Broad anaesthetic practice across multiple specialities
- Strong experience in Critical Care / CCU
- Obstetric anaesthesia experience
- Paediatric anaesthesia experience
- Ability to independently manage complex perioperative patients
- Experience of clinical governance and audit
Desirable
- Additional subspecialty anaesthetic interests
- Educational supervision qualifications
- Research involvement or publications
- Leadership or service development experience
