Rheumatology - Consultant
Apply nowAn excellent opportunity has arisen for a Substantive Consultant Rheumatologist to join a progressive and supportive healthcare organisation in Scotland. The successful candidate will work primarily within a modern, state-of-the-art acute hospital and become part of an established multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality rheumatology services across the region.
You will work alongside Consultants, Associate Specialists, specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and podiatry teams, helping deliver comprehensive outpatient and inpatient rheumatology care. The post also offers opportunities in teaching, research, audit, governance, and service development.

Main Duties of the Job
- Deliver Consultant-led Rheumatology outpatient and inpatient services across the region.
- Manage a broad range of rheumatological conditions, including inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease, vasculitis, crystal arthritis, osteoporosis and musculoskeletal disorders.
- Provide supervision and specialist advice for referrals from acute medicine and other specialities.
- Contribute to integrated care pathways and multidisciplinary management plans.
- Participate in biologic therapy services, infusion services, monitoring clinics and ambulatory care pathways.
- Work collaboratively with Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Renal Medicine, Respiratory Medicine and other specialities.
- Support general internal medicine services and contribute to the consultant on-call rota where required.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and patient safety programmes.
- Teach and supervise junior doctors, nursing staff, allied health professionals and undergraduate medical students.
- Maintain continuing professional development, appraisal and revalidation requirements.
- Contribute to research, innovation and service redesign initiatives.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essentia
- Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of CCT at interview
- CCT in Rheumatology or equivalent recognised training
- MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification
Experience
Essentia
- Broad-based experience in Rheumatology
- Experience managing inflammatory arthritis and general rheumatological disorders
- Ability to work independently as a Consultant while supporting team-based care
- Experience in clinical audit and governance
- Teaching and supervision experience
Desirable
- Management or leadership experience
- Research activity/publications
- Experience introducing service improvements
- Ultrasound or specialist procedural interests
- Higher postgraduate degree
