Haematology - Consultant
Apply nowAn excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Haematologist to join a well-established and progressive Haematology service in the East Midlands.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with consultant colleagues to deliver a comprehensive General Haematology service across inpatient, outpatient, laboratory, and oncology pathways. This is a substantive 10 PA consultant post with additional on-call commitments.
The department provides a broad range of services, including Haemato-Oncology, General Haematology, Haemostasis and Thrombosis, chemotherapy services, MDT working, and specialist diagnostic support.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a comprehensive Consultant-led Haematology service for inpatients and outpatients.
- Diagnose and manage a full range of General Haematology and Haemato-Oncology conditions.
- Participate in the Consultant emergency on-call rota (currently 1:11 weekdays / 1:12 weekends).
- Conduct ward rounds, outpatient clinics, day case activity, and chemotherapy-related reviews.
- Provide advice to other specialities and primary care clinicians regarding haematological conditions.
- Supervise junior doctors, trainees, laboratory, nursing, and technical staff.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and regional cancer network meetings.
- Support clinical governance, audit, patient safety, and quality improvement programmes.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
- Participate in research and service development initiatives where appropriate.
Service Overview
The Haematology department provides a comprehensive service including:
- General Haematology
- Haemato-Oncology
- Haemostasis & Thrombosis
- Inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy services
- Bone marrow diagnostics (networked specialist reporting support)
- MDT-based cancer care pathways
The successful candidate will join an established consultant team supported by trainees, speciality doctors, ACPs, specialist nurses, and laboratory teams.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- FRCPath or equivalent
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT/CESR/Portfolio Pathway completion
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Extensive training and experience in General Clinical Haematology
- Evidence of independent clinical decision-making and risk management
- Experience in inpatient and outpatient haematology care
- Ability to manage acute haematology presentations and emergencies
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Desirable
- Previous substantive NHS consultant-level experience
Teaching, Audit & Research
Essential
- Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Involvement in clinical audit and governance
- Understanding of clinical research principles
- Experience contributing to service improvement
Desirable
- Teaching qualification
- Peer-reviewed publications
- Higher degree (MD / PhD or equivalent)
Leadership & Management
Essential
- Understanding of management and service delivery issues
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Evidence of participation in governance and quality frameworks
