An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a growing and forward-thinking Urgent and Emergency Care service in Greater London.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred acute medical care across Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Clinical Assessment Unit (CAU), contributing to rapid assessment, early diagnosis, and efficient patient flow.

This service is undergoing active transformation, with strong investment in Acute Medicine, modern facilities, and a collaborative, multidisciplinary workforce.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality clinical care across Acute Medicine services, including SDEC and CAU.
  • Provide senior clinical decision-making for acute admissions and ensure timely patient assessment and triage.
  • Take responsibility for patients admitted under Acute Medicine, ensuring safe and effective care pathways.
  • Participate in a 7-day consultant rota providing cover for SDEC and CAU services.
  • Support the use of admission-avoidance strategies through Same-Day Emergency Care pathways.
  • Work collaboratively with the Emergency Department, speciality teams, and community services to optimise patient flow.
  • Supervise and support junior doctors and multidisciplinary teams, including participation in educational supervision.
  • Engage in teaching, training, and mentorship of undergraduate and postgraduate learners.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, and Quality Improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to service development, innovation, and implementation of acute care pathways.
  • Maintain continuous professional development (CPD) and adherence to GMC standards.

Service Overview

  • Dedicated Clinical Assessment Unit (CAU) supporting early diagnosis, stabilisation, and treatment of acute patients.
  • Emphasis on consultant-led care, ensuring all patients are reviewed within appropriate timeframes.
  • Strong multidisciplinary team including resident doctors, nursing staff, and allied health professionals.
  • Active focus on reducing admissions, improving patient flow, and enhancing urgent care pathways.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT).

Experience

Essential

  • Experience delivering Acute Medicine care at Consultant level or equivalent.
  • Experience in direct clinical care of acutely unwell patients.
  • Active participation in clinical audit and governance.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

Desirable

  • Experience in service development or innovation within Acute Medicine.

Skills & Competencies

Essential

  • Expertise in acute medical assessment, diagnosis, and management.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage high patient volumes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong clinical decision-making and risk management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
