An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Retrieval Medicine Registrar to join a specialist retrieval service in Australia. This role involves delivering advanced pre-hospital and interfacility critical care and managing high-acuity patients in dynamic, often remote environments.
The post is ideally suited to senior registrars with a background in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, or Intensive Care, seeking exposure to autonomous, field-based medicine within a highly skilled multidisciplinary team.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver advanced critical care during patient retrievals and transfers across a range of clinical settings.
- Perform rapid assessment, stabilisation, and management of critically ill and injured patients in pre-hospital and interfacility environments.
- Undertake advanced airway management, including intubation and ventilation support.
- Perform invasive procedures, including vascular access, invasive lines, and non-invasive ventilation (NIV).
- Manage trauma cases, including fracture reduction, splinting, and administration of regional nerve blocks.
- Safely sedate and manage agitated or critically unwell patients during transport.
Autonomous & Team-Based Practice
- Work independently in the field while maintaining effective communication with retrieval coordination teams.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including paramedics, nursing staff, and receiving hospital teams.
- Ensure safe transfer of care and comprehensive clinical handover.
Governance & Safety
- Maintain high standards of clinical documentation and patient safety.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Adhere to national standards, protocols, and retrieval medicine guidelines.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
- Eligibility for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA).
- Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, or related speciality.
Experience
Essential
- Senior Registrar level experience in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, ICU, or General Practice (ACCRM pathway) with relevant procedural exposure.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in high-acuity, field-based environments.
- Experience performing advanced procedures, including airway management, invasive access, sedation, and trauma care.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Previous experience in retrieval, pre-hospital, or transport medicine.
- Experience in remote or resource-limited clinical settings.
