Stroke Consultant
Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Stroke Physician to join a high-performing and well-established stroke service in South East England.
You will join a dynamic multidisciplinary stroke team delivering comprehensive hyper-acute, acute, and outpatient stroke services, including thrombolysis and TIA pathways. The service has consistently demonstrated strong national performance and benefits from a well-developed MDT structure.
This role offers a balanced job plan with inpatient, outpatient, and thrombolysis responsibilities, alongside flexibility for teaching, supervision, and service development.
Both substantive and fixed-term applicants will be considered.
Main Duties of the Job
The post holder will provide high-quality Consultant-led stroke services across inpatient and outpatient settings.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver Consultant-level Stroke Medicine services, including:
- Hyper-acute stroke care (HASU)
- Acute stroke unit management
- Conduct daily ward rounds on stroke units
- Participate in thrombolysis service (09:00–17:00)
- Manage stroke prevention and TIA clinics
- Provide stroke outpatient follow-up services
Stroke Service Delivery
- Work within a dedicated stroke unit with:
- Hyper-acute and acute beds
- High patient throughput (~650 admissions/year)
- Collaborate with a full MDT, including:
- Stroke specialist nurses
- Physiotherapists, OT, SALT
- Dieticians and social workers
- Contribute to rapid assessment pathways and imaging-based stroke diagnosis
On-Call & Service Model
- Participate in weekday thrombolysis rota
- Opportunity (not mandatory) to engage in:
- Regional telemedicine thrombolysis services
- Future participation in 7-day stroke services as the team expands
Job Plan
The post is structured as 10 PAs:
Direct Clinical Care (Approx. 8.5 PAs)
- Hyper-acute and acute stroke ward rounds
- Thrombolysis service
- Stroke and TIA clinics
- Patient reviews and clinical administration
Supporting Professional Activities (1.5–2 PAs)
- CPD, appraisal, audit
- Teaching and supervision (additional SPA available if supervising trainees)
Job plans are flexible and reviewed regularly, with opportunities to tailor based on interests.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive stroke care, including prevention, diagnosis and treatment

- Emergency Medicine

- Supervise and support junior medical staff

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in:
- Stroke Medicine / Geriatric Medicine / General Internal Medicine
- (or within 6 months of CCT / CESR)
Desirable
- CCT in Geriatric Medicine
- Subspecialty training in Stroke Medicine or Neurology
- Higher degree (MD / PhD)
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Experience equivalent to UK CCT level training
- Strong experience in:
- Stroke Medicine and General Internal Medicine
- Hyper-acute stroke care
- Competence in:
- Stroke thrombolysis
- Independent patient management
Desirable
- Experience in stroke thrombectomy pathways
- Broad neurology exposure
