An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join a well-established and supportive respiratory department in Greater London.

The successful candidate will join a team of experienced respiratory consultants delivering high-quality respiratory services across inpatient, outpatient, and virtual care settings. The role includes a subspecialty interest in Bronchiectasis and Tuberculosis (Host Defence), alongside a secondary interest in Sleep Medicine, while maintaining a broad commitment to general respiratory medicine.

This post provides an opportunity to take a leading role in developing specialist services for Bronchiectasis and Tuberculosis, to contribute to multidisciplinary care, and to participate in innovative service models, such as a Respiratory Virtual Hospital. The department operates within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment and supports teaching, clinical research, and service development.

There is no on-call commitment for General Internal Medicine (GIM), allowing the role to focus entirely on respiratory medicine.

 

Main Duties of the Job

The Consultant will contribute to the delivery of comprehensive respiratory services and support the ongoing development of specialist respiratory pathways.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide high-quality inpatient respiratory care, including coverage of the Acute Respiratory Care Unit (ARCU) on a rota basis.
  • Deliver specialist outpatient clinics, including:
    • Bronchiectasis / Host Defence clinics
    • Tuberculosis clinics
    • Sleep medicine clinics
    • General respiratory and urgent respiratory clinics
  • Participate in bronchoscopy lists and pleural procedure sessions.
  • Participate in the Respiratory Virtual Hospital service.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, including Bronchiectasis, Tuberculosis, and pleural disease MDTs
  • Participate in the Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) on-call rota.
  • Support the assessment and management of patients with complex respiratory conditions.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including specialist nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists and allied health professionals.
  • Provide teaching and supervision to junior doctors, trainees and allied health professionals.
  • Act as an Educational Supervisor or work towards supervisor accreditation.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service development initiatives.
  • Contribute to research, innovation and education within the respiratory department.
 

On-Call Commitment

The post holder will participate in the Respiratory Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) on-call rota, which includes:

  • Approximately 1:12 weekday NIV on-call rota
  • Approximately 1:10 weekend NIV on-call rota

There is no on-call requirement for General Internal Medicine.
 

Job Plan

The role is offered as 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) with the possibility of up to 12 PAs by agreement.

Typical allocation includes:

Direct Clinical Care (DCC)

  • Respiratory inpatient care
  • Acute Respiratory Care Unit (ARCU) cover
  • Outpatient clinics (Bronchiectasis, TB, Sleep and General Respiratory)
  • Bronchoscopy and pleural procedure lists
  • Respiratory Virtual Hospital participation
  • NIV on-call activity

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Respiratory Medicine or expected within 6 months
  • Meets Royal College of Physicians criteria for Consultant appointment

Desirable

  • Completion of Speciality Certificate Examination (SCE) in Respiratory Medicine or international equivalent
  • Higher postgraduate qualifications, such as an MD or a PhD

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • Experience in acute respiratory medicine and inpatient respiratory care
  • Experience managing Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) services
  • Subspecialty experience in Bronchiectasis, Tuberculosis (Host Defence), or Sleep Medicine

Desirable

  • Experience developing specialist respiratory services
  • Leadership or management experience within respiratory medicine
