Neurology - Consultant
Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Neurologist to join a growing neurology service in South East England. The successful candidate will join an established team delivering high-quality neurological care through outpatient clinics and inpatient referrals.
The neurology department forms part of a wider Frailty, Neurology and Rheumatology service, working closely with multidisciplinary teams including specialist nurses, neuro-radiology services, and tertiary neuroscience centres.
This role offers an excellent opportunity for career development and service innovation, with sub-speciality interests in Movement Disorders or Headache particularly welcomed. The department supports active participation in teaching, research, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering and developing neurological services within the organisation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide high-quality, compassionate neurological care to patients across outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Deliver specialist neurology outpatient clinics, including subspecialty clinics such as epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.
- Provide inpatient consultation and ward referral services to support medical and surgical teams.
- Develop a sub-speciality interest within neurology, such as movement disorders, headache, or other neurological subspecialties.
- Participate in weekly Neuro-Radiology multidisciplinary team meetings and academic meetings.
- Work collaboratively with tertiary neuroscience centres to support complex patient management and service development.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to primary and secondary care clinicians regarding complex neurological cases.
- Contribute to the development and expansion of neurology services locally and regionally.
- Participate in clinical governance activities including audit, quality improvement and service evaluation.
- Support teaching and training of medical students, junior doctors and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in clinical research, educational initiatives and professional development activities.
- Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) and participate in appraisal and revalidation processes.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Medical Degree (MBBS / MB ChB or equivalent)
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Neurology or within 6 months of CCT
- Eligibility via Portfolio Pathway (CESR), where applicable
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualifications such as MSc, MD, PhD, or a Master's in Medical Education
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- At least 7 years post-registration clinical experience
- Demonstrated expertise in general neurology practice
- Experience managing complex neurological conditions in outpatient and inpatient settings
Desirable
- Clinical or laboratory-based research experience
- Publications in neurology or neuroscience
- Sub-speciality expertise in areas such as movement disorders, headache, epilepsy or multiple sclerosis
