An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant ENT Surgeon to join a well-established ENT department in South West England.

The department provides a comprehensive range of ENT services for adult and paediatric patients, including outpatient clinics, elective surgery, and emergency ENT care. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary environment alongside specialists in oncology, radiology, maxillofacial surgery, audiology, endocrinology, neurology, and speech and language therapy.

The service has a strong reputation for clinical training, research, and service development, and the successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing expansion and development of ENT services across the region.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive, consultant-led ENT service and contribute to the department's development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide high-quality care for adult and paediatric patients with ENT conditions.
  • Deliver outpatient ENT clinics and specialist services.
  • Undertake elective and emergency ENT surgical procedures.
  • Participate in the ENT on-call rota (approximately 1:9 with prospective cover)
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including oncology, radiology, audiology, pathology, neurology and speech therapy.
  • Provide clinical leadership and supervision for junior doctors, trainees and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and national audit programmes.
  • Contribute to clinical governance activities and risk management processes.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and service planning.
  • Support the training and education of undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees.
  • Participate in research and service development initiatives where appropriate.
  • Undertake administrative responsibilities associated with patient care and departmental management.
  • Maintain continuing professional development and participate in annual appraisal and job planning.

The post holder will also contribute to service development initiatives to improve patient care pathways and expand ENT services within the region.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical Degree
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • FRCS (Otolaryngology) or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in ENT, or within 6 months of CCT

Desirable

  • Clinical fellowship or subspecialty training in ENT
  • Certificate in Medical Education
  • Higher degree, such as MD, PhD or equivalent research qualification

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in general ENT surgery
  • Experience managing adult and paediatric ENT conditions
  • Experience in emergency ENT care
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team environment

Desirable

  • Experience developing clinical services or treatment pathways
  • Research publications or involvement in clinical studies

Skills and Attributes

Essential

  • Excellent clinical decision-making and diagnostic skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage complex clinical cases
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to supervise and mentor junior medical staff
  • Understanding of clinical governance and NHS service delivery

  • Leadership experience in clinical service development
  • Experience delivering teaching or educational programmes

Teaching, Training and Research

Essential

  • Experience teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement

  • Experience supervising speciality trainees
  • Evidence of research, presentations or peer-reviewed publications

Legal and Professional Requirements

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Eligibility to work in the United Kingdom
  • Compliance with clinical governance and appraisal processes
  • Occupational health clearance
