Locum Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Apply nowAn exciting opportunity has arisen for Locum Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons to join a dynamic and expanding Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service in the North East of England.
The department provides a comprehensive Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service and is actively developing several leading regional specialist services. The team offers a collaborative clinical environment with opportunities for teaching, research and service development.
Multiple posts are available with up to 20 PAs across the service, and flexible or part-time working arrangements will be considered.
The department supports undergraduate teaching through a regional medical school and offers opportunities to contribute to research and quality improvement initiatives.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery services across outpatient clinics and theatre sessions
- Deliver specialist surgical management for patients requiring oral and maxillofacial procedures
- Maintain responsibility for the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients under their care
- Work independently in both clinical and operative settings
- Contribute to the development of specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery services within the department
On-Call Responsibilities
- Participate in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery on-call rota (currently 1:7)
- On-call is delivered on a 7-day cycle with a Friday morning handover
- On-call commitment attracts a 5% availability supplement
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with colleagues across surgical and medical specialities
- Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings
- Contribute to integrated patient care pathways across the region
Teaching & Training
- Participate in teaching medical students and postgraduate trainees
- Contribute to clinical skills training and mentoring of junior doctors
- Support the education and development of trainees within the speciality
Research & Quality Improvement
- Participate in clinical audit and quality improvement projects
- Engage in research initiatives where appropriate
- Support the development of evidence-based clinical practice within Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Job Plan
The role is offered with up to 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) with the potential for 2 additional PAs depending on service requirements.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Registerable dental qualification with the GDC
- MRCS and MFDS qualifications
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery via:
- CCT
- CESR / Portfolio Pathway
- European Community Rights
Desirable
- MD or equivalent higher degree
- Fellowship in a relevant subspecialty
- Evidence of relevant research activity
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Minimum 6 months of UK experience at Consultant level in OMFS
- Ability to demonstrate independent clinical expertise in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary team environment
- Ability to work independently in the clinic and theatre
Desirable
- Substantive NHS experience
- Fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology or other OMFS subspecialty
Teaching & Mentoring
Essential
- Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
- Ability to deliver clinical skills training
- Experience supervising junior doctors
Research & Quality Improvement
Essential
- Experience in undertaking quality improvement or audit projects
- Ability to present and apply research findings to clinical practice

- Evidence of research publications or ongoing academic work
