An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Hepatologist to join a highly regarded Gastroenterology and Hepatology multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality liver services across the region.

The hepatology service provides comprehensive care, including specialist hepatology outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary liver services, endoscopy services and inpatient gastroenterology support. The department is recognised for delivering high-quality hepatology care and has achieved Level 2 IQILS Accreditation for its liver service.

The successful candidate will work closely with regional specialist centres, including a strong collaborative link with a regional liver transplantation service, to support patients with complex liver disease.

This role provides an excellent opportunity for clinicians interested in clinical service development, hepatology research, advanced endoscopy, and teaching. Flexible job planning supports the development of portfolio careers and varied working patterns.

Main Duties of the Job

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide a comprehensive consultant-led hepatology service across inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Deliver hepatology outpatient clinics and manage patients with complex liver disease
  • Participate in hepatology multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings
  • Manage hepatology referrals and support integrated liver care pathways
  • Undertake elective endoscopy procedures, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • Participate in the management of general gastroenterology inpatients when required
  • Provide out-of-hours gastrointestinal bleeding cover as part of the gastroenterology rota

The principal responsibility of the role is to provide high-quality hepatology services, support multidisciplinary liver care, and maintain excellent clinical standards.

Endoscopy Responsibilities

  • Work as an independent endoscopist performing upper GI endoscopy
  • Experience in variceal surveillance and treatment is desirable
  • Additional experience in ERCP and lower GI endoscopy is advantageous
  • Contribute to the development of advanced hepatology and endoscopic services

Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with hepatology specialists, gastroenterologists and specialist nursing teams
  • Collaborate with regional transplant centres for the management of complex liver disease
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to coordinate patient care

Teaching & Training

  • Participate in the teaching and supervision of junior doctors and trainees
  • Contribute to undergraduate teaching programmes
  • Support the training and development of clinicians within the hepatology service

Clinical Governance, Audit & Research

  • Participate actively in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement programmes
  • Contribute to research and academic activities in hepatology where appropriate
  • Maintain professional development through CPD, appraisal and revalidation
  • Support the implementation of evidence-based clinical practice

Job Plan

The role is offered as 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).

On-call Commitments

  • No mandatory commitment to the General Internal Medicine on-call rota
  • Participation in General Gastroenterology and GI Bleed on-call rota (1:9)

A voluntary limited option to participate in General Internal Medicine on-call duties may be available if desired.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, or within 6 months of CCT, or expected Portfolio Pathway (CESR) approval
  • Eligibility to work in the UK

Desirable

  • MD or equivalent higher degree
  • Evidence of research in Hepatology or Gastroenterology
  • Substantive NHS experience

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
  • Ability to demonstrate independent consultant-level expertise in Hepatology
  • Experience managing a broad range of liver diseases
  • Competence as an independent endoscopist performing upper GI endoscopy

Desirable

  • Experience in variceal surveillance and treatment
  • Experience performing ERCP and lower GI endoscopy
  • Experience contributing to hepatology service development

Teaching & Supervision

Essential

  • Experience teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • Ability to supervise trainees and contribute to postgraduate education

Desirable

  • Experience supervising Specialist Registrars
  • Higher teaching qualification

Research & Audit

Essential

  • Experience conducting clinical audits and presenting findings
  • Ability to critically review research and apply evidence-based practice

Desirable

  • Research experience with peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience designing and implementing audit programmes

  • CV must demonstrate the experience and competencies required for consultant-level hepatology practice.
