Consultant Gastroenterology
Apply nowAn excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join a well-established and supportive Gastroenterology multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality patient care across the region.
The department provides a comprehensive gastroenterology service including outpatient care, inpatient management, endoscopy services and acute gastroenterology support. The successful candidate will work within a collaborative clinical environment with strong support for clinical development, research, education and service innovation.
The post is offered as 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) across five working days. Flexible or less-than-full-time working arrangements may be considered, and tailored job plans may be developed to support clinical interests such as sub-speciality work, academic involvement, teaching, or quality improvement initiatives.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities

Provide a comprehensive consultant-led Gastroenterology service for inpatients and outpatients
- Deliver specialist care across a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions
- Undertake diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures
- Conduct regular ward rounds and outpatient clinics
- Maintain clinical responsibility for patients under their care
- Work collaboratively with hepatology and other speciality teams to ensure coordinated patient care
- Participate in service development initiatives within gastroenterology
The principal responsibility of the role is to provide a high-quality gastroenterology service while contributing to multidisciplinary care, clinical leadership, and service improvement.
Endoscopy Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures
- Participate in the development and delivery of the endoscopy service
- Maintain competence and professional standards in endoscopic practice
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with medical, surgical and allied health professionals
- Participate in multidisciplinary discussions and patient management planning
- Liaise with primary care providers and other healthcare organisations to support integrated patient care
Teaching & Training
- Provide supervision and teaching to junior doctors, trainees and medical students
- Contribute to postgraduate education and departmental teaching programmes
- Support the development of future clinicians within the speciality
Clinical Governance, Audit & Research
- Participate actively in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement initiatives
- Contribute to research and academic activities within the speciality
- Maintain professional development through CPD, appraisal and revalidation
- Support the implementation of evidence-based clinical practice
Job Plan
The role is offered as 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).
Typical responsibilities include:
- Gastroenterology ward rounds and inpatient care
- Outpatient gastroenterology clinics
- Endoscopy sessions
- Supporting Professional Activities, including governance, education and research
Participation in the General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota may be required:
- 1:16 weekday rota
- 1:8 weekend rota (desirable)
Flexible job plans may be discussed to accommodate clinical interests or personal commitments.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Gastroenterology, or within 6 months of CCT, or expected Portfolio Pathway (CESR) approval
- Eligibility to work in the UK
Desirable
- MD or equivalent higher degree
- Evidence of research within Gastroenterology
- Substantive NHS experience
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Ability to demonstrate independent consultant-level clinical experience in Gastroenterology
- Experience managing a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders
- Experience in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (scoping)
Desirable
- Experience participating in General Internal Medicine on-call rotas
- Experience contributing to service development within gastroenterology
Teaching & Supervision
Essential
- Experience teaching medical students and junior doctors
- Experience supervising trainees
Desirable
- Experience supervising Specialist Registrars
- Higher teaching qualification
Skills & Knowledge
Essential
- Strong clinical decision-making ability
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
