An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Ophthalmologist to join a large and specialist Ophthalmology department, supporting the delivery of high-quality ophthalmic care across the region.
The successful candidate will contribute to a comprehensive Ophthalmology service with a particular focus on Paediatric Ophthalmology, while also supporting general ophthalmology services. The role offers opportunities to participate in clinical leadership, service development, teaching, research, and quality improvement within a supportive multidisciplinary team.

Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide a comprehensive ophthalmology service across regional clinic locations
- Deliver specialist paediatric ophthalmology services alongside general ophthalmology care
- Provide medical and surgical management of ophthalmic patients, including outpatient and theatre work
- Perform ophthalmic surgical procedures, including cataract surgery
- Maintain responsibility for patients under their care and ensure the safe functioning of the department
- Participate in ophthalmology clinics, monitoring clinics, and theatre sessions
- Provide care for both new and follow-up patients in outpatient clinics
- Participate in the ophthalmology on-call rota supporting emergency ophthalmic services
Service Delivery & Development
- Contribute to the development and expansion of ophthalmology services
- Support the development of innovative service models and improved patient pathways
- Participate in service improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes
- Generate departmental and organisational value through innovative clinical practice
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with ophthalmology consultants, orthoptists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
- Support the delivery of integrated ophthalmology care across the regional service
- Participate actively in departmental and multidisciplinary meetings
Teaching & Training
- Participate in postgraduate medical education programmes
- Provide teaching and supervision to ophthalmology trainees and junior doctors
- Contribute to the training of nursing staff and allied healthcare professionals
- Participate in teaching medical students and support clinical education activities
Clinical Governance, Audit & Research
- Participate actively in departmental clinical audit programmes
- Contribute to regional and national audit initiatives
- Report and review critical incidents within governance frameworks
- Participate in research activities and quality improvement initiatives
- Attend and contribute to departmental clinical governance meetings
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- FRCOphth or equivalent qualification
- Completion of Speciality Training in Ophthalmology (or within 6 months of completion)
- Full registration with the General Medical Council
Desirable
- MD, PhD or other higher degree
Teaching & Audit
Essential
- Experience of clinical audit
- Evidence of teaching junior staff
Academic Achievements & Research
Desirable
- Specialist interest in an ophthalmic subspecialty to complement the department
- Publications in recognised medical journals
Interpersonal Skills
