An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a redesigned Acute Assessment and Frailty service within a modern urgent care model. The post holder will play a key role across the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and Short Stay Ward, delivering consultant-led rapid assessment and supporting multidisciplinary pathways for acute patients.
The department supports specialist interests, leadership development, education, research, and ongoing professional development.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-led rapid assessment and management of patients presenting to AAU, SDEC, and Short Stay Ward
- Conduct daily consultant ward rounds with structured handover and clinical review of admissions
- Maintain clinical responsibility for patients until discharge or transfer to speciality teams
- Deliver safe, effective and timely patient care in line with operational and quality standards
- Ensure accurate documentation, clinical coding, and safe handover between clinicians
- Liaise with speciality teams to facilitate early input and optimise patient pathways
- Participate in a 7-day acute medicine service, including evening and weekend work
- Support the development of subspecialty interests in alignment with job planning
Multidisciplinary & Service Delivery Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with MDT colleagues, including nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and social care teams
- Support patient flow, early discharge planning, and admission avoidance strategies
- Participate in medical short-stay ward rotations
- Contribute to the development and improvement of acute medicine pathways
Teaching & Training Responsibilities
- Supervise junior doctors and support postgraduate training programmes
- Participate in undergraduate teaching and departmental educational activities
- Contribute to simulation training, departmental teaching sessions, and grand rounds
- Undertake educational supervision roles where agreed
Audit, Governance & CPD
- Promote evidence-based practice and compliance with NICE guidance
- Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, and risk management processes
- Engage in appraisal, revalidation, and SPA activities
- Contribute to incident review, governance meetings, and service evaluation
Management & Leadership
- Participate in consultant and departmental meetings
- Support service planning, workforce development, and strategic initiatives
- Work within organisational policies and governance frameworks
- Demonstrate accountability for professional development and service quality
Person Specification
Professional Registration
Essential
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months
Qualifications & Training
Essential
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- Valid ALS certification
- Speciality Certificate Examination (SCE) in Acute Internal Medicine
Desirable
- Higher postgraduate degree (MD/PhD)
- Postgraduate qualification in medical education or relevant teaching experience
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Demonstrated commitment to Acute Medicine
- Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across acute medical presentations
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care
Desirable
- Experience in high-throughput acute assessment or admission units in the UK
- Experience in Same Day Emergency Care or ambulatory pathways
Management & Administrative Skills

- Ability to lead and manage acute medical teams
