An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a forward-thinking Acute Medical department supporting the development of an Integrated Front Door model and Same Day Emergency Care pathways.
This role offers the chance to contribute to service redesign, improve patient flow, and shape innovative acute care delivery while working within a highly collaborative multidisciplinary environment. Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality, evidence-based care for acute medical patients within a multidisciplinary setting
- Lead Post-Take Ward Rounds across acute areas, including Emergency referrals and Acute Medicine pathways
- Provide senior clinical decision-making as Physician of the Day and support rapid patient assessment and flow
- Maintain continuing responsibility for patients under care, including administrative and clinical follow-up
- Participate in the consultant out-of-hours rota and provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues during leave
- Support development of subspecialty interests aligned with service priorities
Teaching, Education & Supervision
- Supervise and support junior doctors and multidisciplinary staff
- Contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education programmes
- Participate in assessment, accreditation and teaching activities across the department
Leadership & Management Responsibilities
- Support the Clinical Lead and Divisional leadership in service development and strategic planning
- Contribute to policy development and implementation of service improvements
- Work collaboratively across divisions to enhance patient pathways and experience
- Assist with resource utilisation, workforce planning and operational management within the division
- Lead incident investigations, report writing and clinical risk management activities
Clinical Governance, Audit & Quality Improvement
- Participate actively in audit, clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives
- Support the development and delivery of divisional governance plans and quality strategies
- Promote evidence-based practice, including NICE guidance compliance
- Encourage research, innovation and continuous improvement across acute medicine services
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT)
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in Acute or General Medicine
- Expertise in managing a wide range of acute medical conditions
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care
- Demonstrated leadership within multidisciplinary clinical teams
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Teaching & Research
Essential
- Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and multidisciplinary teams
- Interest in multi-professional education and training
- Experience supervising postgraduate research or educational activities
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
