An opportunity has arisen for motivated and dynamic Consultants to join an expanding Gastroenterology service that delivers comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, and endoscopy services. The role combines general gastroenterology and endoscopy with the opportunity to develop a subspecialty interest in Nutrition, alongside other interests such as hepatology.
The successful candidate will work within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, providing specialist gastrointestinal care across multiple sites while supporting teaching, research, and service development.
Main Duties of the Job
- Provide consultant-led inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology services across multiple hospital sites.
- Participate in endoscopy services, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and the GI bleed on-call rota.
- Deliver specialist Gastroenterology care, including management of complex GI conditions and nutritional disorders.
- Support multidisciplinary working through participation in GI, HPB cancer, IBD and pathology MDT meetings.
- Provide advisory and liaison services to clinical colleagues, primary care and acute medicine teams.
- Contribute to service development, clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support emergency pathways, including timely gastroenterology input for acute admissions.
- Participate in teaching and supervision of Speciality Registrars and junior medical staff.
- Contribute to endoscopy training and development opportunities, including involvement in the Endoscopy Academy.
- Engage in CPD, audit, appraisal and research activities in line with consultant responsibilities.
- Provide cross-cover for colleagues and maintain continuity of patient care.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on Specialist Register in Gastroenterology (or within 6 months via CCT/CESR/European route)
- Success in the Intercollegiate Speciality Examination or overseas equivalent
Desirable
- Higher degree
- JAG accreditation in Gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Clinical training equivalent to UK CCT in Gastroenterology
- Competence in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including GI bleeding management
- Ability to independently manage emergency and elective gastroenterology patients
- Ability to provide expert clinical opinion
Desirable
- Experience in service development
- Liaison with community services
Management & Administrative

- Ability to prioritise workload and manage outpatient services
- Experience of clinical audit and governance
- Ability to lead MDT and speciality team
