An excellent opportunity has arisen for a substantive Consultant Breast Radiologist to join a large, high-performing Breast Cancer service in the South West. The role covers both symptomatic and screening breast imaging, with the potential to include 1 PA in General Radiology. The department offers a dynamic, supportive environment with a strong emphasis on MDT working, education, audit, and research.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive symptomatic and screening breast imaging services, including one-stop assessment clinics and further assessment of recalled patients.
- Interpret mammography, ultrasound, breast MRI and staging CT.
- Perform breast interventional procedures including ultrasound-guided biopsies, stereotactic core biopsies, vacuum-assisted biopsies, fine needle aspiration and wire localisation.
- Potential involvement in MRI-guided biopsies, CT angiography pre-reconstruction reporting and ultrasound-guided VAEs, depending on experience.
- Participate actively in Breast MDT meetings and MDT preparation.
- Maintain continuing responsibility for the clinical management and continuity of care of patients under your supervision.
- Contribute to general radiology reporting, as included in the agreed job plan.
- Participate in the Radiology Consultant on-call rota as required.
Teaching & Supervision
- Provide professional supervision and educational support to Speciality Registrars in Radiology.
- Support training and mentoring of Advanced Practitioners and Consultant Radiographers.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
- Participate in FRCR preparation, teaching, and departmental educational sessions.
Governance, Audit & Quality Improvement
- Participate in clinical audit programmes and quality improvement initiatives.
- Engage in clinical governance processes and risk management.
- Contribute to service development and policy review.
- Maintain CPD requirements and participate in annual appraisal and revalidation.
Research & Development
- Participate in research activities, including screening, innovation, and imaging trials where applicable.
- Apply evidence-based practice and contribute to the development of imaging pathways.
Leadership & Service Development
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary breast care team.
- Contribute to strategic service planning and continuous improvement.
- Provide compassionate leadership within the clinical team.
- Support financial and operational efficiency within the service.
Person Specific
Essential Requirements
- Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
- FRCR (or equivalent)
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT)
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Demonstrated experience in breast screening (symptomatic and screening)
- Competency in breast assessment clinics and breast interventional procedures
- Proficiency in general and cross-sectional radiology
- Experience in audit and understanding of clinical governance
- Proven teaching ability
Desirable Criteria
- Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD)
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
- Completion of management training
- Research experience and peer-reviewed publications
- Involvement in clinical directorate management
- Demonstrable leadership experience
