An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a growing and innovative acute medicine service in the North West. The role sits at the centre of unscheduled care, working closely with Emergency Medicine and all medical specialities to deliver high-quality, patient-focused acute care.

Applicants must have at least 1 year of NHS experience. Candidates with an interest in Acute Medicine alongside another speciality are welcome, as are those seeking flexible or part-time work.

Primary Duties of the Role

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-led care for patients admitted via Acute Medicine Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and ambulatory pathways.
  • Lead daily consultant ward rounds on AMU and oversee care of medical outliers.
  • Post-take acute admissions from Emergency Medicine and primary care
  • Supervise patients returning to SDEC and ambulatory care clinics.
  • Deliver Acute Medicine outpatient clinics as required.
  • Work collaboratively with Emergency Medicine, speciality teams, and multidisciplinary colleagues.

Leadership & Supervision

  • Provide clinical leadership within Acute Medicine services.
  • Supervise and support junior doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, and Trust Grade doctors.
  • Act as an Educational and Clinical Supervisor for IMT doctors and medical students.
  • Support the development of the multidisciplinary workforce.

Education & Training

  • Contribute actively to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
  • Deliver teaching sessions and bedside supervision for trainees.
  • Participate in educational supervision of IMT doctors and Physician Associates.
  • Engage with the Trust-wide medical education programme.

Clinical Governance, Audit & Quality Improvement

  • Participate in and supervise audit and quality improvement projects.
  • Attend and contribute to clinical governance, morbidity & mortality, and radiology meetings.
  • Promote and embed evidence-based clinical practice and guidelines.
  • Participate in appraisal, revalidation, and job planning processes.

Service Development & Management

  • Contribute to the ongoing development and redesign of Acute Medicine pathways.
  • Participate in departmental management and service planning.
  • Support innovation within Same Day Emergency Care and ambulatory services.
  • Work collaboratively to improve patient outcomes, flow, and experience.

Requirements

Essential

  • Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Specialist registration in Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT / CESR route)
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
  • MRCP (or equivalent)
  • Valid ALS certification
  • Demonstrable experience in Acute Medicine
  • Evidence of teaching and educational involvement
  • Experience in audit or quality improvement activity
  • Strong leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary working skills

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD / PhD / MSc)
  • Registrar-level experience in Cardiology, Respiratory, Geriatrics, or Intensive Care Medicine
  • Experience in ambulatory emergency care
  • Interest in service development or leadership roles
