An excellent opportunity has arisen to appoint Consultant Gastroenterologists to join a well-established, progressive gastroenterology service in the North East. The service provides comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, endoscopy, hepatology, and clinical nutrition care.
Applicants must have at least 1 year of NHS experience. Sub-speciality interests are welcomed, including IBD, liver disease, and hepatology, though candidates with other gastroenterology interests are equally encouraged to apply.
Primary Duties of the Role
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology and Hepatology services
- Provide elective outpatient clinics, endoscopy lists, and inpatient ward cover
- Participate in the Consultant of the Week model for gastroenterology inpatient care
- Participate in the GI bleed on-call rota
- Maintain continuous responsibility for patients under your care and provide specialist advice to colleagues and GPs
- Undertake diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy
- Support the delivery of a 7-day gastroenterology service
Note: There is no requirement to participate in General Internal Medicine (GIM).
Endoscopy
- Deliver high-quality endoscopy services, including gastroscopy and colonoscopy
- Contribute to service development within endoscopy and surveillance pathways
- Support training and supervision of endoscopy trainees where appropriate
Leadership, Management & Service Development
- Contribute to planning and future development of gastroenterology services
- Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and multidisciplinary teams
- Ensure effective and efficient use of allocated resources
- Support service innovation and development of sub-speciality pathways
- Deputise for colleagues during periods of leave to ensure service continuity
Teaching & Training
- Act as Clinical and/or Educational Supervisor for trainees
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
- Support the training of junior doctors and allied healthcare professionals
- Maintain compliance with national training and supervision standards
Clinical Governance, Audit & CPD
- Actively participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance
- Ensure compliance with national guidelines and best practice standards
- Participate in annual appraisal, revalidation, and job planning
- Maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in line with national consultant contract requirements
Research
- Contribute to departmental research activity and clinical effectiveness work
- Participate in or lead research projects where appropriate
- Support evidence-based practice across gastroenterology services
Requirements
Essential
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Specialist registration in Gastroenterology (or within 6 months of CCT / CESR route)
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
- Proven experience in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy
- Proficiency in gastroscopy and colonoscopy
- Ability to supervise, train, and support junior medical staff
- Strong communication, leadership, and organisational skills
- Commitment to clinical governance, audit, and CPD
Desirable
- Sub-speciality interest (e.g. IBD, hepatology, liver disease)
- Experience in service development or pathway redesign
- Research experience, publications, or clinical effectiveness work
- Higher degree (MD / PhD / MSc) or teaching qualification
