We are seeking a committed and forward-thinking Consultant Geriatrician to join a proactive and well-established multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality care to frail and older patients across hospital and community settings.
The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery, leadership, and ongoing development of comprehensive geriatric services, supporting service transformation and improving outcomes for older people wherever they are cared for.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Provide high-quality specialist geriatric care for frail and older patients in inpatient and community settings
- Contribute to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic illness in older people
- Participate in the consultant on-call rota for General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, including out-of-hours cover
- Ensure continuity of care, including cross-cover for consultant colleagues during authorised absences
- Deliver care in line with current quality, safety, and infection control standards
- Support service delivery across the wider clinical network as required
Teaching & Supervision
- Provide clinical and educational supervision to junior doctors and trainees
- Participate in undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education
- Support the professional development and supervision of junior medical staff
- Contribute to departmental teaching programmes and educational initiatives
Quality Improvement & Clinical Governance
- Actively participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance activities
- Initiate and contribute to service improvement projects
- Implement audit and research findings into contemporary geriatric practice
- Maintain ongoing CPD and revalidation requirements
Service Development, Management & Leadership
- Contribute to service development, business planning, and strategic planning within Geriatrics
- Participate in departmental and divisional meetings
- Support development of clinical pathways, policies, and protocols
- Undertake managerial responsibilities as appropriate, including contribution to service leadership
Record Keeping & Governance
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and data quality
- Comply with confidentiality, data protection, and information governance requirements
- Adhere to all organisational policies, procedures, and professional standards
Essential Requirements
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Geriatric Medicine
- (or within 6 months of CCT / via CESR at time of interview)
- MRCP or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
- Broad experience across Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine
- Strong communication, leadership, and multidisciplinary team-working skills
- Commitment to clinical governance, audit, and continuing professional development
Desirable
- Higher degree (MD / PhD or equivalent)
- Experience in service development or transformation
- Evidence of research activity or peer-reviewed publications
- Formal training in medical education or management
