We are seeking an experienced and motivated Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Community Psychiatry to join a well-established Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) in the East of England. This is a 6-month post created to strengthen community mental health provision and provide senior clinical leadership within adult services.
The successful candidate will work as a senior clinician, providing expert psychiatric input, leadership, and supervision while supporting high-quality, patient-centred care across community pathways. Primary Duties of the Role
- Provide consultant-level psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and management of adults with complex mental health conditions in a community setting.
- Act as a Responsible Clinician, undertaking duties under the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
- Provide clinical leadership within the CMHT, contributing to service development and multidisciplinary decision-making.
- Support and advise primary care, crisis services, inpatient teams, and other partner agencies to ensure the integration of care pathways.
- Supervise and support junior medical staff, contributing to their training and professional development.
- Participate in referral triage, risk assessments, care planning, and discharge planning.
- Contribute to clinical governance, including audit, quality improvement, serious incident reviews, and service evaluation.
- Maintain high-quality clinical documentation using electronic patient record systems.
- Participate in the consultant on-call rota as required.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in General Adult Psychiatry (or within 6 months of CCT)
- Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act
- Approved Clinician (AC) status
Experience
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
- Demonstrable experience in General Adult Community Psychiatry
- Experience managing complex mental illness and high-risk presentations
- Experience working within multidisciplinary community mental health teams

- Strong clinical leadership and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication skills with patients, families, and professionals
- Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
- Commitment to evidence-based practice and service improvement
- Experience in supervision, teaching, and mentoring junior doctors

- Understanding of clinical governance frameworks
- Evidence of participation in audit and quality improvement
- Experience supervising and teaching junior medical staff
