An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Histopathologist with a special interest in Breast Pathology to join a modern, digitally enabled Cellular Pathology service in the West Midlands.
The successful applicant will contribute to delivering a comprehensive histopathology and non-gynaecological cytopathology service, with flexibility in job planning, scope of practice, and hybrid working (on-site and remote). The department supports digital pathology and remote MDT participation and has strong support from biomedical scientists for specimen dissection.
There are optional opportunities to participate in post-mortem work, research, teaching, and future leadership or managerial responsibilities within histology.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a comprehensive consultant-level histopathology service, including surgical Histopathology and non-gynaecological cytopathology.
- Act as Breast Pathology lead, including screening and cancer reporting in line with national datasets
- Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, including breast MDTs (remote participation supported)
- Contribute to bowel screening and other relevant screening programmes as appropriate
- Participate in local, regional, and national External Quality Assurance (EQA) schemes.
- Support clinical governance, audit, and development of diagnostic protocols within areas of expertise.
- Contribute to departmental management, business planning, and service development.
- Undertake teaching and supervision of junior doctors, medical students, and laboratory staff.
- Engage in continuing professional development (CPD) in line with Royal College guidelines.
- Participate in departmental research activities where appropriate.
- Optional participation in morbid anatomy/post-mortem services

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Histopathology or within 6 months of CCT
- FRCPath (Histopathology) or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Desirable
- Higher qualification or management training
Training & Experience
Essential
- Appropriate training and experience in Histopathology and diagnostic cytology
- Demonstrable expertise in Breast Pathology, including screening programmes
- Experience reporting non-gynaecological cytology (including FNAs)
- Ability to deliver a full Cellular Pathology service appropriate to a DGH setting
Desirable
- Experience in autopsy services for the Coroner or hospital work
- Experience in service leadership or managerial roles
Clinical Governance, Audit & Research
Essential
- Understanding of clinical governance and audit
- Participation in EQA schemes
- Commitment to evidence-based practice
Desirable
- Active involvement in departmental research or service improvement initiatives
