An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant Psychiatrist in Community General Adult Psychiatry to join a well-established Community Mental Health Team in Greater London on a 0.4 WTE basis.

This role is ideal for a consultant seeking flexible working while maintaining senior clinical responsibility, leadership involvement, and contribution to service development. The post holder will provide consultant-level clinical care, perform Responsible Clinician (RC) duties, and provide professional supervision within a supportive, multidisciplinary environment.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant psychiatric input to a defined community caseload.
  • Act as a Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients under the care of the Community Mental Health Team.
  • Assess new patients and oversee assessments conducted by other team members.
  • Deliver diagnosis, formulation, medication management, and risk assessment using a biopsychosocial model.
  • Maintain senior medical responsibility for CPA and non-CPA patients.
  • Conduct domiciliary visits, including urgent assessments when required.
  • Liaise closely with inpatient services to facilitate timely admission and discharge planning.

Multidisciplinary & Service Working

  • Participate fully in multidisciplinary team meetings and collaborative care planning.
  • Work closely with crisis services, liaison psychiatry, AMHP services, and forensic teams.
  • Support patient flow by actively reviewing the caseload and facilitating discharge.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of community mental health services.

Leadership, Supervision & Governance

  • Provide professional supervision and mentoring to junior medical staff.
  • Ensure junior doctors comply with working time and contractual requirements.
  • Participate in service planning, business development, and management activities.
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in electronic patient record systems.
  • Participate in appraisal, job planning, and revalidation processes.
  • Engage in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activity.

Teaching, Research & CPD

  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
  • Participate in research, service evaluation, and clinical audit.
  • Attend and contribute to academic and CPD programmes.
 

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or within six months of eligibility).
  • Approved Clinician (AC) status (or ability to achieve within 3 months).
  • Section 12(2) approval (or ability to achieve within 3 months).
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

Desirable

  • MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • Higher qualification in medical education, research, or management.
  • Additional clinical qualifications.

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Excellent clinical knowledge and skills in adult community psychiatry.
  • Strong ability to manage complex presentations and clinical uncertainty.
  • Competence in applying the biopsychosocial model.
  • Ability to fulfil duties under the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable

  • Broad specialist or subspecialist experience in community mental health services.

Academic, Leadership & Professional Attributes

Essential

  • Ability to work independently and lead within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit, CPD, and service evaluation.
  • Ability to appraise and apply clinical evidence.
  • Commitment to shared leadership and service improvement.

Desirable

  • Experience leading audits resulting in service change.
  • Research experience, publications, or teaching leadership.
