An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and skilled Consultant Geriatric Medicine Specialist to join a dynamic and forward-thinking service in the South East. The role provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for older adults while contributing to service development, education, governance, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
The service supports flexible working patterns, annualised General Internal Medicine (GIM) blocks, and structured professional development. International candidates with appropriate registration pathways are encouraged to apply.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive inpatient geriatric medical care and specialist management of older patients.
- Deliver a weekly outpatient clinic, with potential progression to rapid-access models.
- Participate in annualised / block-based GIM ward commitments.
- Contribute to the consultant on-call rota in line with agreed job planning.
- Provide timely senior clinical decision-making and escalation support.
- Maintain high standards of patient safety, clinical documentation, and evidence-based practice.
Leadership & Supervision
- Provide professional supervision and mentoring of junior medical staff.
- Support multidisciplinary team development and collaborative care delivery.
- Contribute to clinical pathway optimisation and service improvement.
Clinical Governance, Audit & Quality Improvement
- Participate actively in clinical audit, quality improvement programmes, and governance processes.
- Engage in local, regional, and national audit activity as appropriate.
- Implement audit findings into clinical practice.
Teaching, Training & Research
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education and training programmes.
- Support the professional development of trainees and nursing staff.
- Participate in research and service development projects where agreed.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain compliance with CPD, appraisal, and revalidation.
- Adhere to professional standards, infection prevention policies, and organisational procedures.
- Participate in departmental meetings and management activities.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Membership of a relevant Royal College of Physicians.
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Geriatrics and General Medicine (or within six months of CCT / CESR eligibility).
Desirable
- Higher degree (MD / PhD / Master's in leadership, education, or related field).
Clinical Experience & Skills
Essential
- Completion of recognised training in General Internal Medicine.
- High level of clinical competence in geriatric and general medical care.
- Strong IT and clinical documentation skills.
- Knowledge of current best practices and speciality developments.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Subspecialty clinical interests.
Teaching, Audit & Research
Essential
- Experience teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
- Evidence of participation in a clinical audit relevant to the speciality.
