An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and forward-thinking Speciality Doctor in Emergency Medicine to join a high-volume, high-acuity Emergency Department in the South East. The department operates 24/7 and delivers comprehensive emergency care supported by strong consultant leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, and structured training pathways.

The successful candidate will work under consultant supervision while providing leadership to junior doctors and contributing to service delivery, education, governance, and quality improvement.

This role is well-suited to clinicians seeking autonomy, exposure to complex emergency presentations, and ongoing professional development.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide initial assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of Emergency Department patients.
  • Support the Emergency Physician in Charge, particularly during night shifts, ensuring safe resource management and escalation when required.
  • Independently manage both routine and complex cases with minimal supervision.
  • Rotate across all key Emergency Department areas, including majors, ambulatory care, rapid assessment, paediatrics, and shift leadership.
  • Maintain high-quality clinical documentation and effective communication with primary care and speciality teams.
  • Ensure patient safety, dignity, and evidence-based practice.

Leadership & Teamworking

  • Provide timely clinical supervision and guidance to junior medical staff.
  • Support nursing and allied health colleagues in delivering high-quality emergency care.
  • Contribute to departmental protocol development and pathway optimisation.
  • Participate in self-rostering systems and support internal rota cover arrangements.

Education, Audit & Governance

  • Participate in departmental teaching, education, and research activities.
  • Engage actively in clinical audit, quality improvement, and governance processes.
  • Attend departmental meetings and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance with appraisal, CPD, and revalidation requirements.

Working Pattern

  • The Emergency Department operates 24/7; candidates must be able to work a full shift pattern, including days, evenings, twilights, weekends, and nights.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCEM or equivalent Emergency Medicine qualification.
  • Valid life support certification: ALS, ATLS, APLS.
  • Ultrasound Level 1 (or equivalent).

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Experience working within Emergency Medicine services.
  • Ability to lead clinical areas during shifts.
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

Desirable

  • Two or more years’ experience in Emergency Medicine within the NHS or comparable healthcare systems.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of clinical governance, audit, patient safety, and quality improvement.
  • Awareness of risk management and resource utilisation.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of national healthcare standards and NHS operational frameworks.
