An exciting opportunity has arisen for Consultant Neurologists to join a growing neurology service in the South West. The role offers the opportunity to practise independently as a general neurologist while developing a subspecialty service aligned to individual expertise. Applications are welcomed from all neurology subspecialties, with a particular interest in epilepsy considered highly desirable.
The successful candidates will contribute to high-quality outpatient and inpatient neurology services, collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, and participate in teaching, research, and service development.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality general neurology services across outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Provide consultant-led inpatient ward reviews and respond to ward referrals.
- Deliver outpatient neurology clinics and develop subspecialty clinics aligned to expertise (e.g., epilepsy, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, headache).
- Participate in the duty neurologist rota, ensuring dedicated inpatient cover during duty weeks with no scheduled outpatient clinics.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, including complex neurology, imaging, and subspecialty MDTs.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and uphold patient safety standards.
Service Development & Leadership
- Develop and lead a subspecialist neurology service in line with departmental strategy and population need.
- Contribute to service redesign, pathway improvement, and quality initiatives.
- Provide clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team.
Teaching, Supervision & Education
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
- Supervise junior doctors and contribute to the professional development of nursing and allied health colleagues.
- Support mentorship and training initiatives.
Research, Audit & Governance
- Participate in clinical audit, governance, quality improvement, and research activity.
- Contribute to clinical trials and innovation where appropriate.
- Maintain appraisal, CPD, and revalidation requirements.
Professional Responsibilities
- Fulfil duties agreed within the job plan and personal objectives.
- Provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues as required.
- Comply with organisational policies including data protection, confidentiality, and health & safety.
- Undertake additional professional responsibilities by agreement.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
- CCT in Neurology (or within six months of completion at interview).
Desirable
- Subspecialty expertise (epilepsy preferred).
- Experience in teaching and research.
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Ability to work independently as a consultant neurologist.
- Strong commitment to patient-centred care, teamwork, and service development.
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit.
- Ability to lead and manage a clinical service area.
- Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.
Desirable
- Active involvement in service improvement or outcome-driven audit.
- Broad awareness of healthcare systems, governance, and resource management.
Skills & Attributes

- Ability to prioritise clinical workload effectively.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Excellent communication and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
