An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Neurologist to join a small, cohesive consultant team delivering comprehensive neurology services in the South West. This post offers scope to expand outpatient services, develop subspecialty interests (including neuroinflammation/MS, movement disorders, headache, dystonia, or epilepsy), and contribute to teaching and research activities.

The service is well supported by specialist nursing teams, registrar-level medical staff, and comprehensive neurophysiology and imaging services, enabling high-quality outpatient and liaison-based inpatient neurology care.
 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-led care for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological disorders across outpatient and liaison-based inpatient settings.
  • Deliver timely assessment and management of neurology referrals, including advice to general medical teams via ward referrals.
  • Participate in the neurology consultant rota, ensuring adequate service cover during annual leave and absences.
  • Provide outpatient clinics, including specialist clinics aligned to the post holder’s subspecialty interests.
  • Participate in an acute neurology clinic and a rotating “consultant of the week” model.
  • Utilise day-case facilities for procedures such as lumbar puncture and planned infusions.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical documentation and administrative practice.

Teaching, Training & Supervision

  • Participate in the education and training of junior doctors, medical students, nurses, paramedics, and general practitioners.
  • Provide professional supervision and mentoring to trainees and junior staff.
  • Support undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programmes.

Governance, Audit & Research

  • Participate actively in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in research activity in line with agreed departmental priorities and available resources.
  • Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning in accordance with professional standards.

Service Development & Collaboration

  • Contribute to the ongoing development of neurology services in line with strategic and population needs.
  • Liaise effectively with colleagues in other medical specialities and participate in multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Undertake additional professional responsibilities at the local, regional, or national level where appropriate.
 

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

  • Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
  • CCT in Neurology or within 6 months of the interview.

Desirable

  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register.

Experience

Essential

  • Appropriate specialist training and experience in Neurology.
  • Ability to manage a broad range of neurological conditions independently at the consultant level.
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

  • Demonstrable specialist interest(s) within neurology, aligned to service needs.

Skills & Competencies
